We’ve been hearing rumors about a Pixel Watch for a while, which originated as rumors of a Nexus Watch way, way back. But up to this point, Google has never actually made their own smartwatch like they’ve done with phones and tablets. They’ve left Wear OS to third-party partners, for better or worse.
Unfortunately for all Pixel Watch hopefuls, Google has confirmed that there won’t be any announcement this year. Expect the typical Pixel phone line, but that’s it.
It’s a pretty strange move considering Google has spent much of the past few months improving Wear OS which really looked like they were prepping their own hardware, but it looks like they’re really just committed to making it a solid platform for partners to work with. Google also says they want to be able to make a truly universally loved watch, and they’re just not there yet. One size fits all is a tough task when you’re dealing with devices like smartwatches that are pretty evenly split between users that want them for fitness while other users want smart functionality and apps.
Google also probably realizes they only have one shot at making a good first impression, and if they blow it, it’s going to do much more damage to Wear OS as a whole without having anything to show for it. Do it once, do it right.
So we’re still expecting some new Pixel stuff soon, but you’re just gonna have to sit tight on those watches. Give it another year or so, and in the meantime, check out our IFA 2018 coverage.
