Insider tip: Froyo coming to Captivate and Vibrant around mid-October

Well, we’ve been talking about it for a while, and everyone wants to know: “When is Froyo coming to the Galaxy S?”

While rubbing shoulders with dozens of Android fans and industry workers here at the big Android BBQ, I happened to bump into a gentleman from Samsung. After buttering him up for a while, I finally asked the all-important question regarding the Galaxy S and Froyo. It actually surprised me when he was so quick to answer with “mid-October”.

There’s a catch though: it will only be released initially on the Vibrant and the Captivate. Apparently, the issue with the Epic 4G and Fascinate is the CDMA. Don’t ask me why, because I’m not sure.

But don’t worry, CDMA users, Froyo will be coming to your devices, it’s just going to take a little longer. Sadly, my contact had nothing to say as to when.

Oh yeah, after 3 months the phone has been release, we might get an 5-month old update in the coming near future! How exciting!

  • Jeff

Come on LP, that’s really not too bad considering Samsung’s track record. Look at the Behold 2, or how long it took the Moment to be upgraded. And think of all those poor Motorola Cliq and Backflip users waiting a year to be upgraded to a 10 month old update. After being promised getting it in the spring and waiting to almost the winter. Hell, they may never get it. At least Samsung is making an effort. So just take the upgrade and shut up.

YES! So excited I’ve been every damn day and finally I’m getting some where.. Can’t wait to get this update.

  • Harvy dent

Don’t get too excited, you never know with samsung.

    UPDATEGATE!!

  • bdub

I can wait that long – I mean, helloooo, it was at least 6 months or more before the G1 ever had ANY update – and it was minimal…I don’t mind waiting – I at least hope that stupid mediahub app is part of the update – it’s worthless, and on my ignore list right now. Also, BIG question – I am new to the whole “rooting” thing – my vibrant is rooted, and runs awesomely – however, I cannot get a straight answer on any other forum about whether or not I will still be able to recieve updates when they come out – I would assume that I can – unless rooting blocked that service somehow. Can someone please answer this for me? email me direct even. skoalcwby77@gmail.com because I won’t check on here as often as I do my email. thanks!

You never know with samsung so don’t get too excited

  • Jeff

Skoalcwby, you will NOT be able to receive OTA updates on your rooted phone. You’ll have to do a quick unroot then check for updates in settings once it becomes available. Either check out the forums over at XDA or download RyanZA’s one click lag fix. It has an option to unroot your phone. I personally might wait for CyanogenMOD 6 to come out. He said he’s already working on it for the Vibrant so if you have the Captivate you may not want to hold your breath. Hope this helps.

Hey Jeff – thanks for the reply! I was assuming so, but like I mentioned – first time root user here, so still not 100% on all the ins and outs. I’ve flashed my Vibrant back to stock once – pretty simple…and pretty pointless thus far since there aren’t any mods out for it yet…mainly did it to get a feel for it, and to get rid of some crap apps. Again, appreciate the info!!

Yes you still will be able to update while rooted, the only thing that root blocks it when your service provider sends push notifications so you will just have to manually check every so often. but as a general rule it is always a good idea to unroot just to make sure nothing goes wrong

Mid-September means mid-January of next year.

Google is on a fast train with these android releases and these companies need to understand they have to keep up with them to make it the best user experience….however I think there are way to many different cellphones out there right now and big companies are spreading themselves to thin….they need to focus and see what is going to make $$$$ in the future.

  • jjkk

Release it already please, i wAnt full flash player on my captivate already..! So yeaaaah.

It is mid-November and still no Froyo!!!! When is it coming???? I know that this is not Talk Android’s responsibility but it is my frustration. :-\

  • JS

There must be some lazy ppl working in samsung/tmobile…

Some tip this turned out to be. They should take stories like this down so people don’t think the author is ignorant. Do you believe everything people tell you? In that case I won vietnam all by myself.
