Motorola has been excelling in phone design and performance for some time. Unfortunately, they're not the best brand in the software department. Their Razr foldable series launched in 2023 with Android 13 is finally getting the Android 14 update. But it's quite comical since both Razr and Razr Plus phones should have gotten it sooner, considering that they launched in the same year as the update.

New phones typically arrive with the latest Android version, or receive it very shortly after. In this case, users had to wait almost an entire year to get the latest software for brand-new and premium devices.

Motorola Razr Plus 2023 phones arrive late to the Android 14 party

Android 14, also known as “Upside Down Cake” is finally coming to the Motorola Razr Plus 2023 phone. Google officially released it to the public on October 4, 2023, after a series of betas. If you’re using a Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, or other new phone models, you’re in luck because Android 14 is pre-installed on them.

The latest version brings some fantastic upgrades, among which you'll notice a streamlined Quick Settings panel that makes connecting Bluetooth and WiFi devices easier, the added UltraHDR mode in the camera app, and Generative AI wallpapers that make your phone unique.

Other interesting features include using your phone as a webcam, enhanced PIN security with auto-confirm for Pixel users, a centralized hub for all your health data called Health Connect, and improved magnification for better accessibility.

It's three more months to October, which will officially make it a year since Android 14 launched. Meanwhile, the Razr Plus phone came out in June 2023, giving the update a four-month headstart. Then there's Android 15, codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream,” which is already in the works, with an expected release in August.

What does this late release mean for you?

Since the Motorola Razr Plus (2023) is just now receiving the Android 14 update, it is highly likely that you'll wait a bit longer for Android 15 — and that's understating it as we're looking at a year or more. It usually takes time for manufacturers to adapt and optimize updates for older devices, even if the said foldable isn't that old. Motorola may be focusing on providing the Android 15 update to its latest flagship models.

Luckily, the brand has promised three years of OS updates for the Razr Plus 2023, so the Android 15 update should eventually become available for the device. Expect it to arrive sometime in 2025, but the exact date remains uncertain. Until then, enjoy the new features and enhancements Android 14 brings. If it's any consolation, many phones, including the Razr 2024 and Razr Plus 2024 models expected to launch this month in July, won't get Android 15 immediately or at all.

Currently, some Razr phones have started receiving Android 14, though not all devices have it yet as its typical manufacturer behavior to phase out releases for more stability. Motorola also quietly released a support document detailing what's new in Android 14 for the Razr 40 Ultra, which is the international name for the Razr Plus.
