Spotify is my music streaming service of choice, as much as people might preach the perks of competing services like Apple Music. I find it easy to use, and recently, with the new DJ feature, it was clear that the company was experimenting with the capabilities of AI.
I've used DJ a few times, but it looks like Spotify might be set to introduce an AI feature that is bound to get a lot more use from me. The company is testing a feature that lets you put together AI-generated playlists based on the text prompts you provide.
Making Playlists On Spotify Is About To Become A Whole Lot Quicker
As I've probably said several times in 2024, AI is the new big thing and it doesn't seem set to fade out of the limelight any time soon either. Even music streaming services like Spotify are finding ways to integrate AI into their products to make them more appealing to use, and the next one coming up from Spotify seems like it might be a winner.
Spotify seems set to introduce a new feature that will allow you to create playlists using the power of AI and text prompts. For instance, you'll be able to tell Spotify to make a playlist containing “upbeat rock music for a Lego-building marathon” or “sad classical music to listen to right before a trip to the dentist”. Using the power of AI, it'll be able to search through Spotify's massive catalog, find music that it thinks fits the vibe you're going for, and compile those songs into a playlist.
I think this feature will be very handy not just for putting music together for a specific kind of mood or event, but it'll also be a great way to discover new tracks. Spotify has a playlist called “Discover Weekly” which it puts together every week to provide you with music it thinks you'll like, but sometimes it doesn't hit the mark. You could potentially use this feature to direct it better towards exactly what you're a fan of listening to.
When Will This Be Available?
There's no word on when this feature will actually launch officially, but for now, it is in its beta phase. If you live in the UK or Australia and you're subscribed to Spotify Premium, you'll be able to access this device on your Android device by going to the Your Library tab and tapping the plus icon in the upper-right corner. You'll see the AI Playlist option and be able to use it from there.
This Isn't Spotify's First Foray Into AI
Spotify released a feature sometime last year, if I'm not mistaken, called AI DJ (the DJ's name is Xavier). When you choose to use the DJ, it assesses music that you've listened to at points in the past, music that you currently listen to, and also music that the DJ thinks you'll like to listen to.
Xavier will then speak to you like a radio DJ and mix things up, introducing what kind of music he plans to play for you, before playing a handful from that segment and moving on to something. This feature is great when you're not sure what you want to listen to and simply want to get things started. It's one of those things Spotify offers that keeps me away from alternatives.
