The Huawei Watch GT launched earlier this year without Google's Wear OS, and for the most part it was a pretty nifty smartwatch that focused on a small set of features instead of tons of apps and fluff. That's not for everyone, but for someone itching for a basic smartwatch with great fitness tracking, it's an excellent option.
But skipping Wear OS didn't just take away the apps. It also limits the amount of customizing you can do on the Huawei Watch GT, since there are no custom watch faces to create or install. There were a few basic things to pick from, but anyone wanting a lot of real customization would be disappointed. The latest update from Huawei looks to address that.
Currently, custom watch faces are pretty limited to users in China, and you'll have to make your own or download them from somewhere on the internet. Huawei has some guides online that help users get them loaded onto the watch via the desktop Hi Suite program, and you'll need the beta Health app on your phone, too. That's really not user-friendly at this point, so it's definitely still in the testing phase while Huawei makes sure everything actually works out.
But once all the bugs and kinks work out, it looks like the Watch GT will become an infinitely more customizable watch. Might be worth taking another look.
