Sony is finally doing something about their tired Xperia design language, and the result is pretty impressive. They’re showing off the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact at MWC 2018, both of which feature a slick new design, a fantastic screen, and some serious hardware.
The Xperia XZ2 is the true flagship for the company, offering a 5.7-inch 2160 x 1080 display. That’s another phone with a tall aspect ratio, bringing Sony’s phone designs in line with their contemporaries like Samsung and LG. It’s an HDR screen with some upscaling for standard content, so you can expect a pretty great media experience here.
The headphone jack is gone, although the Xperia XZ2 is packing stereo speakers. It’s a small consolation, but also pretty in line with most other manufacturers in 2018. Sony is also touting a new Dynamic Vibration System, which supposedly analyzes audio data and replicates that feeling while you’re listening to music or watching movies. I’m not entirely sure how useful that will be, but it’s definitely something interesting to check out.
The camera here is also top-notch, with full 4K HDR video recording capabilities and 960fps 1080p slow-motion capture. On paper, that means Sony has Samsung beat in the camera department, at least as far as video resolution is concerned.
But really, we’re here for that new design. Sony trimmed up the bezels and adopted a glass back with metal edges. There’s a fingerprint scanner on the back center of the phone (which means US customers will actually get to use it this time around) and it overall feels like a fresh and exciting new direction for Sony. Oh, and that glass back means wireless charging.
The Xperia XZ2 Compact is very similar to its bigger counterpart, although you will have to make a few sacrifices for the smaller 5-inch screen. There’s no fancy vibration engine, for example, and it’s made of plastic. No glass here. That also means it ditches the wireless charging, which is pretty unfortunate.
With all of that being said, Sony has always made fairly nice devices, they just price them outrageously high. They haven’t announced actual availability or pricing for either model here.
We do know the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be available in White Silver, Black, Moss Green, and Coral Pink, so there will be plenty of color options for picky buyers. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more, but in the meantime, check out of the rest of our MWC 2018 coverage.
