Got an HTC Wildfire that's been acting up?  No worries, HTC has squashed those annoying bugs via a firmware OTA update.  The fix is to include issues related to Facebook, Google Talk, and Android Market, as well as changing the way it handles importing contacts.  HTC recommends updating over wifi due to it's large size.

It may not be the coveted Froyo update I'm sure many of you are waiting on, but better to have a stable phone first before any major changes come. Hit the jump to read the full announcement:

Full HTC Announcement:

You can now download the latest software update for new features and improved performance. It won’t delete any of your content and we’d recommend using a Wi-Fi connection as this is a large update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. Any questions? Contact us via www.htc.com. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number). The new Software number will be 1.25.405.1
Update Information: 1. Enhances support for Facebook status display when dialing; 2. Increases support for Google Services like Google Talk, Android Market and others; 3. Improves combining contacts from Outlook and other source.

  1. I saw that I am not alone.

After update wifi died, dont turn on, I loved when I bought, but I hate after update to 1.25.405.1 version.

HTC told me that cant help me because device is not selling in my country (Brazil).

    HTC never more.

    good look for us.

  2. Amazing. I just bought a wildfire a week ago, February 2011, It upgraded to 2.2.1, and now no WiFi. I call technical service and the say they don’t know about that problem. They tell me to send it to repair. Of course I won`t. I prefer to loose the warranty and root the phone, as I told them.

  3. I updated my Wildfire and my WiFi cannot start, same as others here.
I was a true lover of this mobile phone and (since other HTC that I got) this is the best that I had.
But now, I can just not understand why HTC can release this kind of FW with this kind of trouble and without any fix!
I think that it will be the last HTC that I will buy!

  4. How useless are HTC???? My phone is less than a week old and installed the update… sure enough wifi no longer works. Never buy a HTC, ever, ever!!! If they can’t trial a simple update first, what chance have they got of getting anything correct. Do the world a favour, post to as many sites as possible about this crap service – when they go broke they may realise their stupidity!!

  5. I just got my phone back this morning. It works perfectly again. The only thing is that it now has Dutch software, which is handy for me but I have lost the possibility to write Chinese characters on the touch screen.

  6. hi there.I am also an htc wildfire user.I istalled the update and everything worked fine but after seeing this whole complaing site it made my skin shudder!i dont believe that i am the luckiest person in the world, quite the opposite, but that just did it.If i saw this site earlier i wouldnt dare to have it installed.I was searching if its better to root your phone rather using ota updates(since you cant use OTA since its rooted or so ive been told)and found this site
and since you must root your wildfire check this.I hope it helps.Havent done it myself yet,but i really intent to do it.

  7. I should have said they should help you, not will help you….
I bought mine in China and am now in the Netherlands.

About the hardware replacement, I agree that it is strange. Maybe with the old hardware it would go wrong with the next update again? Not that I will dare press yes on the update question again…..

I hope my phone will be fixed soon. I still think it’s wrong how HTC is handling this problem. it has probably put people off buying HTC again.

  8. Hi Nina,

That is not entirely true – I bought in Hong Kong; apparently it is made in Singapore – called Hong Kong, called singapore – i am in India now – called India.

No other location would help since it belongs to Singapore.

Singapore wants me to send at my cost through DHL both ways paid to Singapore so that they can ‘fix’ it and send back.

i fixed using rooting mode and it works just fine without any hardware replacement…

    regards
    venu

  9. I also bought my Wildfire overseas but that doesn’t matter. Just call the HTC Customer service in your country and they will help you.

My phone was picked up by HTC 2 weeks ago and they have just informed me that they will replace the motherboard in order to fix this problem.

  10. bought a wilfire overseas 4weeks ago installed update a week ago and now have no wifi… really stuffed up my new phone that we spefically bought because of the wifi ability that we need when we travel. Have done a reset but still no wifi… really pissed off and can not send it back to be fixed where we bought it.. need help

  11. The ‘program’ is unrevoked 3 which roots your wildfire then allows you to install custom roms. The current Froyo version is wildpuzzle 8.08 written by danne jo. It works very well take a look at XDA wildfire site

  12. Hey Jasper, don’t disappear after giving us a sweet taste of your success… :)

Tell us at least how to start digging into this wonderful world your nerd daddy unveiled for you.

  13. ok guys! listen carfully! i thought id have to get a new phone, but my dads a real nerd, and he ROOTED he phone, using a simple program you can download off google.

this not only fixed the problem, it also gave me 2.2 froyo! which makes the phone run much faster, look much better, and you can get WAY more apps and games from android market. i highly reccomend it!

the only thing is, back up all your data maybe on your sd card first, or on your computer, because it wipes the phone clean. but its worth it! i highly reccomend, plus youll get froyo.

  14. Yes, that is the point. it checks for all updates through Wi Fi and they do all Over the Air…

they should first put up a fix as a PC based utility that all can do using the USB cable and get wi fi working.

then we can forget about any more of thier updates since it would be only to disable one by one other functional parts.

  15. yeah. whatever you do, DONT RESET. it just screws it up even more. i tried resetting mine (like HTC told me too) as a last resort, but as soon as its reset, wifi STILL doesnt work, which means you cant set up any accounts, and now my phone is worthless. the bugger with this is, if the wifi doesnt work, then we cant get any future updates to fix it, BECAUSE IT CHECKS FOR UPDATES USING THE WIFI!!!

STUPID BLOODY HTC, THIS IS HOPELESS.

  16. Great, let us see what they come back with. please do ask them and post for all of us details on what they did so that we can see if we can do it ourselves… 2 weeks after 1 month of messing up is too long a time.

  17. HTC picked up my phone for repair this morning. The said it will take around two weeks. The sooner the better of course, but i’ll be relieved to just get it fixed.

  18. Mine was bought on 14th August 2010 – hence definitely not that old that it cannot take this great OTA update.

Yes, cannot understand that a company who should definitely have a team of people who know clearcase or any other source control mechanism can definitely allow the ‘small bunch’ of affected phone customers to revert to the earlier one and be done with this?

It should not take this long to do this. Now that Wi Fi does not work; they should allow this fix to be done using USB so that all of us can download that to our PC and then using the USB connector do the revert…

such a shame – this phone is useless – we can better get the $10 phone if it is only for voice and sms…. no need of ‘smart’ phone – this definitely is like wildfire that cathes all of us unaware.. would not have accepted this update if had the faintest idea that it was to screw up the phone like this – even if bluetooth radio was messed up; that was kind of OK but messing up wi fi for a smart phone is not acceptable.

as usual if any one finds out any way to get it back working; then please post here so that all of us can atleast get the phone back to working.

    many thanks

  19. Well yep same thing happened to me, updated my phone to the newest update, my phone is less then a couple mouthes old and i have never dropped it, and after installing this so called update my wifi is shut off on my phone. I tryed the hard reset, lost my songs photos and videos, and still the have no wifi.
If anyone finds a solution please let me know

  20. HTC replied quickly to my emails about this issue but they say they don’t have a solution yet, they also say just a small number of phones are affected.

I don’t understand how they cannot have a solution. The last software worked so just give us a file to reset the phone to that. It should be very easy!!

Without wi-fi the phone has almost no functions….

  21. No they are not asking for forgiveness but not bothered about this issue at all – say that it is one off and hence does not warrant any seriousness from HTC and if the customer wants should send the phone back to the repair centre at our cost and they may try to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

what a shame – all people keep praising them as X number smart phone company in the world; but does not look like.

they cannot mess up wi fi radio in the bargain of doing and OTA update and then not care about it – it is more than 20 days and no progress…

  22. Here’s another very unhappy Wildfire owner.
I don’t routinely have wi-fi switched on to save battery power. Switched on wi-fi for the first time since the phone automatically updated itself to the new improved OS version and surprise surprise, wi-fi no longer works.
How is it that HTC can do such a stupid thing as allow a so obviously untested OS release. I’m furious. Deathly silence from HTC. They should be begging forgiveness and releasing fix RIGHT NOW. IDIOTS.

  23. Why not root your wildfire, then flash the PuzzleRom v 7.3 rom onto it and voilà, one rooted faster nicer working phone. all works. and there about 3 months ahead on the froyo update as there already bug testing a froyo rom as we speak ^_^

  24. no luck. now one needs to send the phone to the nearest repair centre at OUR cost – both ways – and they would fix it!!!

such a crap bunch of folks. mess up a working phone and then ask the customer to pay for DHL and Fedex charges…

never again do any updates from these folks and never buy anything from them.

  25. Hello All,

Is there a way to get the phone back to normal with the Wi Fi radio working again?

HTC seems clue less and not responding to any support calls.

is there a utility that would allow us to revert the firmware back using USB cable?

    Many Thanks
    Venugopal

  26. Mine is the same, pefect wifi till silly update. Why cant they just do another update to fix it? No point in having a smart phone that isnt smart anymore. i travel overseas alot and having wifi is very important.

  27. I had exactly the same problem after performing the update.

The wifi was working fine without this update. Now I can not even turn on the wifi.
I have no idea how to solve this problem.

They should not recommend an update without testing it!
Having a cell phone as the HTC wildfire without wifi makes no sense to me.

I hope the problem can be solved as soon as possible!

  28. Yes, after installing this update; the Wi Fi is not working.

No way to get it back working? It was a perfectly working phone with Wi Fi..

So where is the question of hardware problem all of sudden??

What is the way to get it back? Even hard reset does not work.

It is possible to download an earlier version of firmware on THE PC and then transfer it using the USB cable to the phone?

    Many Thanks

    Venugopal

  29. Yup!! This Wildfire update stopped my perfectly working phone from running WiFi, called HTC and yup same answer, reset which obviously doesn’t work and then send the phone for repairs.

  30. This update suckz.
My girlfirends wildfire doesnt connect to the wifi automaticly anylonger and she cant type different letters when writing.
I can write but i can no longer use my phone as a modem to my laptop.

    This i fucking aweful!! =(

  31. No hes not. Update installed perfectly for me afterwards no wifi. HTC helpline no help as were unable to suggest anything other then hard reset. when this didn’t help they said it might be a hardware fault. this is after downloading the update via wifi on a perfectly functioning phone prior to running this.
hope someone else has a solution as I’m not happy.

  32. After this update had stopped WiFi on my HTC WildFire on long time. I am looking for how to remove this “amazing” update and get properly working device again. I can not imagine the working on device without WiFi. Thank you for this 1.25.405.1 again I am very regret that agreed to install it.
