Samsung is holding off on the launch of the Galaxy S9, but that does not mean news about the new device was not swirling around CES 2018. While making comments at the event, Samsung head DJ Koh revealed the company plans to officially announce the Galaxy S9 at MWC 2018 in Spain. That date will be a little bit earlier than recent years. To help get everyone stoked, an image of the retail box for the Galaxy S9 also leaked out and revealed some intriguing information about the smartphone.
The interesting information found on the alleged retail box for the Galaxy S9 concerns two areas – the device camera and the audio capabilities. For the camera, the box lists the rear-facing camera as having an aperture of F1.5/F2.4. This suggests that Samsung is equipping the camera with a variable aperture that mechanically opens and closes. If so equipped, this should put the Galaxy S9 ever closer to competing against DSLR cameras and should push it to the forefront of the competition when it comes to smartphone cameras. At least among smartphones that the general consumer would buy as Samsung does have a variable lens camera in a top-tier $3,000+ flip phone that it sells in China.
The other bit about the camera that is intriguing is reference to a “Super Slow-mo” function that will be available. There have been rumors that Samsung wants to compete against a similar product offering from Sony which offers a 960 frame per second slow-mo mode.
On the audio side, a couple references indicate Samsung has partnered with AKG to tune and enhance audio on the Galaxy S9. The first reference is to “Stereo Speakers tuned by AKG”. It is not uncommon for manufacturers to reference stereo capabilities despite single speaker setups, but what is interesting about this reference is the plural of speaker. That could mean Samsung is planning to bring a dual speaker setup to the device.
Another AKG reference on the box suggests Samsung is planning to include some earphones in the box with the Galaxy S9 and these too – like the stereo speakers – will be tuned by AKG.
