Google’s next update to KitKat could be close to release

A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Google was aware of a battery drain problem regarding the Nexus 5 and that a fix would be coming soon. A new version of Android (KTU65) showed up in the Chromium code. Originally it was restricted so that only Google employees could see it, but for whatever reason, the restriction was removed.

KTU65 obviously refers to a KitKat build since the first letter is the designator for the version of Android. We explained in detail what the rest of the letters/numbers mean in a previous post, but in a nutshell, this build was created on March 6, 2014, so it’s obviously current.

Going back to the battery drain issue, the problem is with the camera and how often it communicates with third party apps that require the camera. Skype was a big culprit, but at the time, it didn’t appear to be a Skype problem, but more of an Android problem. Skype recently issued a fix, which seems to indicate both. There could also be other reasons for the battery drain because a lot of people on Android 4.4.2 are complaining about the same thing. My Moto X doesn’t have Skype installed and the battery barely lasts 10 hours after the 4.4.2 update.

Obviously Google is always working on updates, so what exactly this latest update pertains too is anybody’s guess. I also wouldn’t bet on the final version having the same combination of letters/numbers since there will likely be more revisions.
