Tronsmart Edge 20,000mAh portable charger review: Fast charging on the go

Tronsmart is well known for their portfolio of accessories. From Bluetooth headphones and speakers to lightning cables and screen protectors, they’re likely to have an accessory you’re looking for. Portable chargers are among their best and the 20,000mAh Tronsmart Edge does not disappoint. The Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 power pack also supports Huawei’s FCP fast charging tech that can combine to charge up to four times faster than competing devices. VoltiQ is also onboard, automatically detecting a device and adjusting amperage and wattage so nothing is drawing too little or too much power. So how does their largest capacity charger hold up in real world use? Let’s take a look.

Three devices can be charged simultaneously with two USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C. The left USB Type-A supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0, Huawei’s FCP fast charging and VoltiQ, while the right one supports VoltiQ for standard devices. The USB Type-C port can both fast charge a compatible device or act as an input for fast charging. A fourth Micro-USB port is dedicated to charging the Edge at a standard speed.

The Edge is equipped with multiple lithium-ion polymer batteries and is proven to charge a Google Pixel XL 3.5 times, a Samsung Galaxy S8 4 times or a Nintendo Switch 2.3 times on one charge. It can also charge an iPhone 8 over 7 times, but why would you use an iPhone? I was able to charge my Galaxy S8 from 0% to 100% in about 95 minutes, which is impressively comparable to what Samsung’s own quick charger achieves. There are four LED lights on the lower end of the device’s front that show its battery status.

The Edge is about the size of a 6-inch smartphone, but also a lot thicker and heavier. There are heavy bevels around both sides that round the edges and make it comfortable to hold. It’s also coated in a soft-touch finish that’s a little grippy and feels nice in the hand. The dimensions are 151mm x 79mm x 26mm, so it’s possible to carry in a (loose) pocket and easy to throw in a small bag or backpack. It does have some weight to it so you’ll definitely feel it in a pocket, but it also allows you to walk and quick charge simultaneously.

Tronsmart has equipped the Edge with a 10-point safety standard that protects from short-circuiting, overvoltage, overcharging and overheating. It’s an excellent portable charger that stands above many with the combination of Qualcomm quick charge 3.0, Huawei FCP fast charging, VoltiQ and a high capacity. In my experience, charging a Galaxy S8 with the Edge was as fast as plugging Samsung’s quick charger into a wall outlet, so your compatible devices won’t see a slowdown. It will safely charge phones, tablets, laptops, cameras and wearables.

A travel pouch is included, which is nice, but they only include a very short USB Type A to micro-USB cable in the box.

If you have a phone or laptop that charges via USB Type C, however, you can use that to quick charge the Edge. Any micro-USB charger will also work at a slower rate. I guess Tronsmart assumes that you already have something, and to be honest, they’re probably right.

You can find the 20,000mAh Tronsmart Edge on Amazon for $36.99 and it comes with an 18-month warranty. After using it for a week, I highly recommend it.
