Byke for Android Brings P2P Bike Sharing to Londoners

Living in London and have a bike that you don’t use? Then you are just the type of person Byke is thinking of, which aims to get people in the capital hiring out their bikes for a fixed daily fee. On Android, Byke has an ‘augmented reality’ view that will show bikes available for rent hovering above the location (as below).

Byke may be of particular interest to Londoners right now as an alternative to Mayor Boris Johnson’s £140m bike hire scheme, which was recently announced would not be ready in time (Boris is something of a comic figure in UK, largely for his blundering style of public speaking). It certainly has the potential to be cheaper, with its £3.50 per day cost for rental (though a deposit does also have to be paid).

The service isn’t limited isn’t limited to London however, as it aims to provide for people looking to rent (or rent out) bikes world-wide. It is all in the early stages at the moment, but if you want to, you can point your Android device over to Byke’s beta site at to have a look for yourself.
