OPPO shows off a credit card-sized ‘slide-phone’ concept with a trio of folds

If you’ve been thinking that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a boring design then perhaps the new concept from OPPO in partnership with Japanese design studio, nendo, will be of interest. Sporting a triple-fold hinge, the ‘slide-phone’ is roughly the size of a credit card when folded.

After the recent announcement of the OPPO X 2021 rollable concept, the slide-phone offers a different take on the whole expandable smartphone premise. Instead of turning a bulky smartphone into a much bigger display, why not start off with a compact design that can be extended to relatively normal size?

As you can see from the images above, the slide-phone fits neatly in the hand when compact, with the trio of hinges allowing for numerous form-factors to be realized by folding or sliding the display. When closed, there’s a 1.5-inch panel that notifies you of calls, messages, and other notifications, which then expands to 3.15-inches that is ideal for snapping pics or playing casual games according to OPPO. Fully extended, the slide-phone has a narrow, 7-inch form-factor.

The exterior houses four cameras, and you’ll even find a stylus located in a built-in slot, which will prove useful when navigating the top section of the display when the phone is fully extended.

It’s important to note that, unlike the OPPO X 2021 rollable concept, the slide-phone will almost certainly remain the stuff of dreams. If OPPO’s slide-phone was to something make it to production at some point, would you actually buy one?
