One of the more mysterious smartphones that has been under development for the past year is the RED Hydrogen One device. RED originally started taking pre-orders for the smartphone last summer and then slid off the radar until January of this year when company president Jim Jannard provided an update. In the latest bit of news related to the device, both Verizon and AT&T will supposedly offer the device for sale on their networks.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the RED Hydrogen One is supposed to be the 4V display that will be capable of offering up a “holographic” 3D image without the user having to wear any special glasses. Another unique feature is a magnetic pin system on the back of the device to be used to attach different accessories similar to what Motorola did with their Moto Mods.
Otherwise the device was packed with what was typical for a 2017 flagship level smartphone – a Snapdragon 835 processor, a nice large 4,500mAh battery and Type C USB charging port. It will be interesting to see if RED will be able to update the device that is actually going to market with this year’s top processor, the Snapdragon 845.
No details have been released yet regarding a firm date or pricing. Last year pre-orders were in the $1,195 and $1,595 range for aluminum or titanium respectively.
