Sony announces the Xperia XZ2 Premium with 5.8-inch 4K display, dual cameras, and a “Summer 2018” release date

Sony launched its brand new range of flagship smartphones, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, back at MWC 2018 in Barcelona which came with 18:9 displays, rear fingerprint scanners, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. If you were left feeling like you wanted more from Sony’s latest flagships, though, perhaps the Xperia XZ2 Premium with its bump in specs will piqué your interest.

Sony announced the XZ2 Premium today, and it sports many of the same features and specifications as the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact with some notable exceptions such as more RAM, a dual-rear camera setup, a larger battery, and a 5.8-inch 4K HDR LCD panel.

This is the first time that Sony has ventured into dual camera territory, and instead of following in Samsung’s footsteps by adding a telephoto lens, it has rather added a Monochrome lens into the mix like Huawei has done since it launched the P9. Sony claims that the cameras are capable of ISO 51200 for still photos and ISO 12800 when recording video although it’s unclear how the manufacturer has arrived at these figures. Also, there’s no mention of OIS to be found in Sony’s press release, which is something to be noted, although something called “SteadyShot™ with Intelligent Active Mode (5-axis stabilization)” is present.

If you’d like to order the Xperia XZ2 Premium, it’s probably best to tell you now that you can’t. At least, not yet anyway. Sony has given a somewhat loose launch date of “Summer 2018″ for the Xperia XZ” Premium, and there are no pricing details to be found. Although seeing as the Xperia XZ2 costs $799, it’s a reasonable extrapolation to expect the XZ2 Premium to be north of the $900 mark. If you are in the UK, expect to be disappointed because it doesn’t look like Sony is planning on selling the XZ2 Premium across the pond.

It’s all thanks to the new dual sensor system in the Motion Eye Dual camera and AUBE™ fusion image signal processor to capture more than the human eye can see.
