Andy Rubin takes a leave of absence after accusations of an “inappropriate relationship” while at Google

2017 has been a crazy year, and unfortunately, we’re starting to see it bleed into the tech industry before it’s over. Andy Rubin is the next in the headlines, and he’s officially taking a leave of absence from Essential after some new accusations.

According to The Information, a report surfaced about an “inappropriate relationship” between Rubin and a Google employee several years ago. The employee was in Rubin’s Android division within Google, which is where the conflict of interest comes from.

The woman Rubin was in a relationship with filed an HR complaint at one point, and after an investigation by Google it was concluded that the relationship broke some rules. Rubin left the company not long after in 2014.

Rubin’s spokesperson has gone on the record stating that he didn’t do anything wrong, however.

Any relationship that Mr. Rubin had while at Google was consensual. Mr. Rubin was never told by Google that he engaged in any misconduct while at Google and he did not, either while at Google or since.

Now, circling back to the title of this article, after these allegations dropped Andy Rubin announced he’d be taking a leave of absence from Essential, his new company that’s seriously struggling right now. I’m not sure if he thinks that distancing himself from the company is the right move to avoid hurting its reputation, but with how rocky Essential has been since its inception, losing a leader right in the middle of Q4 doesn’t sound so great.

Then again, most of Essential’s recent problems could’ve been avoided without Rubin. So who knows.
