Lenovo to add Play devices to Moto G series in 2018

According to the latest tip revealed by Evan Blass, Lenovo is planning to add Play branded devices back to their Moto G series during 2018. Currently, we expect Motorola to release both the Moto G6 and the Moto G6 Plus as part of the G series of devices. The Moto G6 Play will be a third option for consumers.

In the past, Motorola used the Play version of their smartphones as a budget or base version for their different phone series. When last used with the Moto G series, Motorola released the Moto G4 Play alongside the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. In that case, Motorola shrunk the size of the phone down to only 5 inches, although they did keep the internals on  par with the “regular” versions of the G4 phones so the Moto G4 Play did not suffer a performance penalty for being a budget version of a budget phone.

For now we do not have any information on how the addition of the Moto G6 Play to the portfolio might be accomplished and whether Motorola would follow the same strategy they have used in the past. When Motorola released the Moto G4 Play it came a few months after the release of the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus instead of being done at the same time.
