Unicode 10 is announced with 56 new emoji including the ‘Colbert’

Just in case you were thinking that you needed a bigger choice of emoji to choose from, Unicode 10 has been released with 56 new emoji including dinosaurs and the ‘Colbert’ amongst others and will roll out to supported platforms later this year. Join us after the break for more details.

Notable additions include the Colbert (face with a raised eyebrow), bearded man, zombie, T-Rex, the Bitcoin symbol, and the love you gesture. If you are running the Android O beta on your device, these new emoji are already present and accounted for, and as such will definitely be included in the public release.

“Unicode 10.0 adds 8,518 characters, for a total of 136,690 characters. These additions include 4 new scripts, for a total of 139 scripts, as well as 56 new emoji characters.”

Having grown up when people used to handwrite letters to stay in touch with friends and family, I’m truly amazed by how much we can say in an instant message without having to write an actual word. Instead of a whole paragraph of words, now we get 6 emoji telling us that “someone is drinking coffee, eating a doughnut, reading a book and listening to music in Scotland”. Do you use emoji when you use messaging apps?

What is your favorite emoji from the new additions?
