New images surfaced via sources in China claiming to show the back of the forthcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone. Xiaomi is expected to launch the device in February and there have been plenty of leaked renders of the Mi 5 with the most recent coming just a couple weeks ago. The photos that surfaced over the past day hint at the Mi 5 having a fingerprint scanner and laser autofocus for the camera sensor.
Previous leaks surrounding the Mi 5 suggested Xiaomi was transitioning to a design that makes use of a glass-covered back panel and metal construction. However, the new images show a design more focused on an all metal design for the case with a rounded back panel not constructed of glass.
Present on the back panel is an apparent fingerprint scanner and the hardware necessary for a laser autofocus unit for the rear-facing camera. Previous information suggested the camera will be a 16 megapixel unit.
The leaked images also show a 3.5mm headphone jack being located in the top edge of the smartphone. The bottom edge gets a USB connector and a speaker grille.
Other hardware expected to be included in the Xiaomi Mi 5 include a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 3,600 mAh battery, and a 5.2-inch Quad HD display. Xiaomi co-founder Li Wanqiang has previously indicated the company has already started mass production of the Mi 5 with a launch sometime in February, but likely after the Chinese New Year on February 8th.
