Those of you waiting to grab the world’s thinnest smartphone will finally have the chance to do so… well in China at least. Starting today, those of you living in the Chinese markets will be able to preorder the device for 2,498 yuan or $393 USD. Sounds like an attractive price, but I’m sure many of you are itching to know what you get exactly for that price, right? Well the smartphone features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, an 8MP camera (with 1080P video recording) plus 1.3MP front-facing camera and a heaping scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich— all squeezed into a 6.65mm frame that happens to be the world’s thinnest (for now).

Interested parties will want to head on out to www.oppo.com ASAP— the preorder window will close at 11:59pm on June 24th.

Samsung Galaxy S III Uses A PenTile Display Because It Lasts Longer

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , ,

The Samsung Galaxy S III is the company’s next flagship phone, which means it has upped all the specs from previous versions. Some folks, however, are crying foul because of the announcement that the S III will be using a PenTile display matrix, not the previously rumored Super AMOLED Plus. A PenTile display uses a different subpixel layout (one red and one blue subpixel for every two green ones). In other words, it’s not quite as sharp and could show color fringing along the edges of images, especially when compared to Samsung’s much revered Super AMOLED Plus displays.

So why did Samsung go PenTile for the S III? According to MobileBurn, it’s apparently all about screen longevity. Samsung states that Super AMOLED Plus displays have a tendency to deteriorate over time, especially the blue subpixels, which actually degrade the fastest. Since PenTile displays feature fewer blue subpixels, they will last longer, says Samsung. Also, since the pixel density of the S III’s screen is much higher due to its high resolution, the PenTile issues are minimized and most people cannot see the difference in quality.

Samsung Galaxy S III Screen To Be 4.6-inch Super AMOLED+ According To OLED Association Report

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , , ,

Prior rumors of a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED+ HD screen for the Samsung Galaxy III just got another plausibility boost. This time it comes from the OLED Association. According to a news report on Samsung’s screen technology, it seems they may have just let the cat out of the bag.

SMD [Samsung Mobile Display] is planning to release a 4.6” Super AMOLED HD Plus with the 319 ppi for the Galaxy S3 Super AMOLED plus in May of this year.  In addition, SMD is expected to add phosphorescent green, which will reduce power consumption and make the OLED display competitive with the retina display at white levels of 40%, while significantly outperforming LCDs for images and video.

The Plus means this screen will not be using a Pentile pixel matrix. That’s good news since a Pentile display shares the red and blue pixels on the green cell, rather than having three separate cells, making the display nearly 30% less sharp, technically, than a full dot matrix screen. Normal users won’t notice a difference, but many screen enthusiasts (screenophiles?) claim they can, and won’t buy a device with a Pentile display.

This report also mentions a May release, which seems perfectly plausible, but we have no other evidence to confirm this date.

Samsung might unveil Super AMOLED Plus 7-inch displays with 720p (1280 x 720) by the end of the year

by Robert Nazarian on

Samsung Mobile Display plans on producing 7-inch displays with improved resolutions in September. Back in 2010, Samsung showcased the first 7-inch prototype with WVGA 1024×600 resolution, but they are pushing for improvements. Their goal is to reach 720P (1280 x 720) SAMOLED with a pixel density of 180ppi.

It appears more likely that they will achieve 720p with a 4-inch screen sooner. Hmmmm, I am thinking Nexus Prime, what about you guys?

Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-10

Sometimes it sure doesn’t take long for the firmware of new devices to leak out, and seldom does it leak out before the device has even launched. That’s not the case here however, as the Samsung Galaxy S II firmware for Android 2.3.3 is now available for download at this location. The firmware build number is I9100OXXKDC, compiled on April 26th by SamFirmware, so it shouldn’t be long now before we start seeing some nice custom development handy work. Who knows, we may even have some of it available before the Galaxy S II launches in North America!

Happy hacking!

Samsung Infuse 4G Announced

by Michael Murphy on
tagged , , , ,

The Samsung Infuse 4G for AT&T (mind you, that’s HSPA+ 4G, like HTC’s Inspire, not LTE 4G) just made its debut, and overall people are excited. Matt at Gizmodo is downright thrilled, and feels like this should have been the new Nexus phone. Sporting a 1.2GHz CPU and an 8 megapixel camera, this phone is really pushing the envelope. It’s got a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display (more subpixels per pixel than the already-great Super AMOLED screens), and runs an as-yet-unknown version of TouchWiz.  Nicely, it is described as feeling exactly how you want a state-of-the-art phone to feel in your hands.

There is some concern over the battery life, as this has one of the biggest displays we’ve seen on an Android phone AND it’s one of AT&T’s first 4G phones, so we’ll have to see how well they can optimize the battery usage. Either way, it’s a solid offering, and we’ll be excited to see more of it.
