As we move further into the holiday season, we’re going to start hearing more rumors about phones, tablets, and the occasional Black Friday ad. Sam’s Club has recently leaked an ad for November 23rd with a few interesting deals, especially if you’re interested in picking up a new Android phone or tablet at a great price. Read more
Looks like Google may have hit a home run with the $199 Nexus 7 tablet (read our full review here). According to Reuters, retailers across the US are reporting their stock as being sold out. So far, GameStop, Staples, Sam’s Club, Office Depot, and Walmart have all run out of their pre-order allotments before the Nexus 7 even hit store shelves.
“We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson stated. Their third allotment won’t arrive until August. GameStop would not say how many units comprise an allotment.
This brings up the question of just how many units have been made for the initial production run. A previous rumor pointed to only 600,000 tablets being made in June, which could account for the quick sell-outs. With the Nexus 7 getting highly-positive reviews praising its high-end specs and low price, 600,000 doesn’t seem like nearly enough.
Of course, prior Nexus devices haven’t been top sellers in the past, so perhaps Google simply underestimated the demand of a low-cost/high-performing tablet. I’d rather believe that over Google purposefully keeping the initial production numbers low to artificially drive up demand. The Nexus 7 is good enough to stand on its own and doesn’t need marketing tricks to make it look popular.
Who’s already ordered theirs, and have you gotten it yet?
The Droid Bionic is one of the most anticipated phones, but I am starting to wonder if it will live up to the hype. We have been expecting it to launch on August 4, but according to a Sam’s Club document, it will be in September.
Nothing is confirmed, but I am not expecting it to land on August 4th because I it is likely Verizon and Motorola will hold a major press event to announce the phone, which is likely to be at least 2 weeks before the release. Right now there is nothing scheduled.
I also expect them to launch a major Twitter campaign like they have done with most of the top Droid phones. This will be the biggest Droid release to date so we should expect the same. Even if they don’t do a press event, they will at least run the Twitter campaign, and until that begins, there is no need to start lining up at your nearest Verizon store. The Droid Charge campaign started 8 days before the launch so we need to see something by this Wednesday. I know a lot of people want to believe the August 4 date, especially since some accessories were leaked at Amazon, but I am not holding my breath.
Also to note, the LG Thrill is showing as late July, but we reported earlier that all signs point to August 7, and the Samsung Conquer was originally expected to launch yesterday, but it has been pushed to August. The Motorola Photon seems to still be on track for July 31, which was officially announced by Sprint.
Just a few days ago, we heard about a new mid-range smartphone from Samsung that will be a 4G device called the Samsung Conquer. That device seems to be making its way over to Sam’s Club on July 24th as seen in the leaked shot above of the Sprint device launches to take place there.
This mid-range device actually has decent specs;
- 3.2MP rear camera and 1.3MP front camera
- Android 2.3 Gingerbread (with Sprint ID)
- 1 GHz CPU
- 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen
- Tri-Band CDMA
This one will most likely go for a small $99 on a new 2 year with 4G data plan, but we’ll have to wait and see.
For those of you that are members of Costco, you can order the Motorola XOOM for $589. That is $10 cheaper then anywhere else plus a free gel case is included. The downside is shipping will not begin until April 1.
The XOOM is expected to be available at Best Buy, Radio Shack, Staples, Walmart, and Amazon on March 27 for $10 more ($599). It is also rumored that select Sam’s Clubs will also carry the XOOM for $539. If that price holds up it will be an amazing deal. I personally will be surprised if Sam’s Club goes that low but we will let you know when more information is available. Hit the source link for more information or to place your order.
It has been rumored for a while and now it is official. Motorola has announced the 32gb Wi-Fi only XOOM tablet for the United States. It will be available on March 27 at Best Buy, Amazon, Costco, Radio Shack, Staples, Walmart, and select Sam’s Clubs. The price will be $599. The $599 price was originally leaked from a Staples Ad. About 2 weeks ago, it was also leaked that Sam’s Club will carry it for $539. It will be interesting to see if that price holds.
The $599 price matches with the 32gb version of the Wi-Fi only Ipad 2. I would still like to have seen it cheaper, but at least it is in the ball park. The XOOM does have a better screen and the SD card slot for expandability when it gets enabled.
