Last year we covered some of the best apps available on the Play Store for playing your locally stored tunes, and even though a ton of music listening has gone in the streaming direction, many people still prefer keeping music on their phone or tablet. If you’re dealing with low monthly data caps or you’re going somewhere without an internet connection, solid music players are still fantastic to have. We figured now would be a good time to update our previous guide with some newer apps along with updated info on the apps that made it over to this year’s list. Hit the break to get started. » Read the rest
Music is a big part of a smartphone’s feature set. We’ve already talked about the best available music streaming services, but sometimes music streaming isn’t an option, whether that’s because you’re dealing with a pesky data cap, you’re somewhere without a reliably fast internet connection, or you would just rather keep your music on your device. Whatever the reason, we’re going to go over the top music playing apps for your Android device so hit the break to find out more.

Christmas Day Winners
A couple weeks ago Poweramp teamed up with TalkAndroid in a contest to give away a Nexus 7 grand prize in preparation for a pending update to their app. As part of the contest, readers were asked what feature they would like to see in the popular music player app. Those who participated can check out how they did with their prognostication skills as Poweramp released the update to the Google Play store today. Among the improvements are “rich” notifications for users running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on their device. Other improvements include better .wav and .wma support, audio in .flv, and music folders that can go ten levels deep along with some bug fixes.
If you participated in our contest, how did you do? Did Poweramp deliver what you were hoping for or are you going to have to wait for the next upgrade? If you are interested in trying Poweramp or grabbing the update, use one of the download links below.

The folks over at MaxMP and Meltus contacted me for a little giveaway this holiday weekend. We’ve got two $20 gift cards to your favorite web store such as Amazon, Newegg, or something else. They also threw in 25 free copies of Poweramp and Volume+. Poweramp is a major veteran when it comes to third party music players in the Google Play Store. With features like a 10 band optimized graphical equalizer for all supported formats, separate Bass and Treble adjustment, downloading of missing album art, a tag editor, lyric support, and so much more, it’s obvious that this is the best player around. To top things off, you will also get Volume+, which is the perfect compliment to Poweramp. It boosts up your overall volume including your bass/treble and you can save/load custom EQ settings. This one also works with other apps like Google Music, Pandora, Slacker and other apps for those times when you want to take things to the cloud. Poweramp is priced at $4.99 and Volume+ is priced at $1.99. If you’re doing the math, your total prize value is $6.98.
All you have to do is head over to our forum post and tell us your favorite song right now. We will pick 2 random winners for both $20 gift cards and 25 random winners for both Poweramp and Volume+. You have until tomorrow May 27th at 11:59pm EST and we will announce the winners on Monday May 28th. Good luck!!!
Also, MaxMp is working on a major update to Poweramp, which would bring it to version 3.0. They want you guys to tell them what new features you want and/or if there are any particular bugs that you’ve noticed. You can head over to their survey page and let them know.
Click here to enter and hit the break for Google Play Store links for both apps.
