Carbon backup app hits the Play Store in free and premium versions

by Jared Peters on
tagged , , , ,

Koushik Dutta, developer of popular apps like DeskSMS and Clockwork Mod recovery, has been teasing up with betas of his new app, Carbon. Those betas have expired today, but the official app is now available in the Play Store in two versions, a free and paid app. The app backs up your apps and data to an SD card, or cloud storage if you don’t have enough memory on device to store all of your apps. Rooted devices can just use the application itself, but unrooted users will need a companion desktop application to get it working. Motorola users are left out in the cold on this one, though; there’s a bug in Motorola’s software the breaks Android’s backup features.

The free version of the app is ad-supported and lacks a few features of the premium version, such as Android-to-Android sync and cloud sync. There’s also a scheduled backup feature planned soon for the premium version. If you’re running Android 4.0 or above, hit the links below to try out the app.

Carbon Beta 2 released with support for Dropbox, other features

by Jeff Causey on
tagged , , ,

Users looking for a backup solution for their Android devices should probably be keeping an eye on Carbon. The app comes to us courtesy Koushik Dutta, creator of Clockwork Mod Recovery and a CyanogenMod ROM maintainer. Earlier this week he released the first beta of his newest creation that will backup apps and data between devices in the cloud.

Today he released the second beta that adds support for Dropbox, though that feature is limited at the moment while Dutta waits for “production” status from Dropbox. New features in this second beta include the ability to save groups and batches of apps, the ability to select all apps for backup, and the ability to backup data only. Fixes included in this second beta address backup/restore windows popping up once per app and some button click issues.

The new Carbon beta will work through January 25th. This version requires a rooted device, but Dutta says the next beta will work on non-root devices. If you want to try out Carbon Beta 2 and you have a rooted device, use the link below:

Clockwork Mod creator releases Carbon backup beta for one week

by Macky Evangelista on

Koushik Dutta, the famous Android developer that created Clockwork Mod Recovery (ROM Manager) and a CyanogenMod ROM maintainer, has released a beta for of his Carbon backup application. His Carbon app syncs and saves the app and its data between devices in the cloud. Syncing in the cloud certainly makes this app interesting and different from most of the backup apps out there. The app requires your device to be rooted and this beta will only be available for a week, so try it now if you wish to. Especially if you’re an avid ROM flasher!

Hit up the link below for the download link and video of the app!

ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0 Alpha Brings Faster Backups And Smaller Incremental Backup Files

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , , ,

Good news from Koush of ClockworkMod fame… an alpha test build of ClockworkMod version 6.0.0.0 has been released that greatly speeds up device backups, and also reduces the file size of incremental backups to around 20MB.

For those who don’t know, ClockworkMod Recovery is a replacement for the stock recovery of any Android device. The recovery is basically a partition on the device’s memory that you can boot into and perform some basic functions, like a factory reset or a restore of the stock ROM. Besides that, stock recoveries don’t usually let you do much more.

ClockworkMod Recovery, however, allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations that aren’t usually possible with the stock recovery. It can be used used to help gain root access, back up device data, install custom ROMs and kernels, install themes, mods and more. ClockworkMod, built by Koushik Dutta, has been one of the most popular recovery replacements in the modding community.

Koush Shows Off Official ClockWorkMod Recovery Touch, Still Under Development

by Stacy Bruce on
tagged , , , , ,

Going thorough my Google+ stream this morning I noticed  an entry from Koush, the man behind CloworkMod and CWM Tether, and boy does he have something awesome up his sleeve! As you can see in the video below, Koush is working on a new touch version of ClockWorkMod Recovery that is going to make things a heck of a lot easier, especially for the uber sensitive Galaxy Nexus.

I know that other forms of “touch” recovery are available, like TWRP from TeamWin, but Koush’s new method that he is working on will allow for swiping and tapping your selections rather than using buttons. Although Koush is teasing his new recovery method via Google+, this is still just a tease. Currently downloads are not available, and according to Koush, “there will be better graphics and whatnot later.” By that I assume the text might be a little easier to read and the UI might get a slight makeover. Whatever it ends up as, I’m sure it will be an amazing finished product. In the meantime, check out the video below and be sure to let us know what you think. Who else is looking forward to some swipe recovery action ?

The CyanogenMod Team Wants You to Weigh, Do You Want a CM App Store for Rooted Apps?

by Jack Holt on
tagged , , , , , , ,

I know what you’re thinking. Why the heck do we need yet another app store on our phones, what with Amazon, GetJar, and the Android Market and a slew of other apps that do this same thing. However, I think you’ll want to hear me out on this one because this proposes to be a different kind of app store. Here’s the back story.

Recently Koush, the man behind ClockworkMod Recovery and ROM Manager, came out with a tethering app that bypassed the need for a tethering plan and one that did so without the need for root access. While there are other apps that do the same thing, Koush is known for bringing us very good software. Well it wasn’t long before carriers banned the ability to access this app in the Android Market as they did with other tethering apps. It’s those moves done by carriers that spurred this article to begin with. So here’s the deal. » Read the rest

Koush Releases ICS Alpha Build For Nexus S, Now in ROM Manager [Courtesy of XDA]

by Jack Holt on
tagged , , , , , , ,

Have a Nexus S? Looking to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich? Well look no further. If you are wanting to get a taste of an early build of ICS check out Koush’s build available in the ROM manger. For those of you who don’t know, Koush is famous for the Clockwork Recovery mod  that allows the flashing of various ROMs and mods and for the ROM manager itself which makes the process entirely painless.  Let it be known that this is an Alpha build and everything isn’t working as it should be and that your Nexus S needs to be rooted. According to Koush:

“What doesn’t work:
Camcorder
Facebook account sync, missing apps from market. I am fairly sure this is a build fingerprint issue. Can probably be resolved by using the fingerprint of the Galaxy Nexus, etc. Will need to wipe between changing fingerprints.”

The GPS may not work but I will let you head over to XDA and read why that is. So for those of you who are chomping at the bit to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, here is a chance by a more-than-reputable source. Just remember that it is an Alpha build and there may be some bugs or issues that have to be resolved. Hit the link below to download the zip file courtesy of Koush and XDA.

by Chris Moor on

Do you believe in miracles? This was the question for the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team. The answer back then was yes. Thanks to Koush, miracles are still possible today. He has made a custom recovery available on the Droid X. You can download it for free on his website, or do the thing that I will do, and download it for $2 off f the Market to support Koush. The works of Koush are explained on his website, and are also explained after the break.
