Google I/O 2012 was nothing short of a spectacular event, and Android was front and center with Jelly Bean‘s announcement, the Nexus 7 tablet, Google TV updates, and the Nexus Q media ball thingy (I vote for calling it the ‘Q Ball’). There was an entire floor dedicate to our beloved green robot, and he could be seen virtually everywhere inside and outside the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Head on past the break to see pictures of an army of Androids at the conference. Which one is your favorite?

The Nexus 7 tablet was not the only star at Google I/O this year. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shared the spotlight and is just as impressive, if not more so. In this video, we walk through some of the standout features of Google’s latest mobile OS, including recommendation widgets, flick to delete, icon and widget interactions, Google Now, and more.

Even though Jelly Bean only moves Android up to 4.1, there are enough new features to consider this much more than a minor release.

Hit the break to see Jelly Bean in action on the Nexus 7.

Google TV Will Get A Big Update At Google I/O

Google TV has had a rocky start with Logitech pulling out and adoption rates overall pretty low. But Google is not giving up. In fact, as we already expected, Google will be announcing a big update during Google I/O this week. The update is said to combine live TV listings, your own DVR content, and Netflix. The idea is to put content front and center.

The Mountain View company is certainly dedicated to making Google TV a success. Through several learning sessions during I/O, Google will help make it easier for developers to get their content onto the platform. Partners are also being added, such as Sony who announced that their NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV will be available July 22nd for $199.

It is not yet known exactly when the update will hit and what devices will get it, though I’m sadly expecting it to bypass my Logitech Revue.

Google To Launch IaaS Cloud Service At Google I/O

by Ed Caggiani on

Sources have told GigaOM that Google will likely be launching a cloud services platform next week at Google I/O to compete with Amazon’s EC2 and Microsoft’s Azure services. Sure, Google already has cloud services with its App Engine and Google Cloud Storage, but this would be a more comprehensive enterprise-level offering known in the industry as IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service).

Cloud computing comes in three flavors, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). They each provide increasing levels of rented virtual resources. With IaaS, users simply rent use of servers provided by one or more cloud providers. PaaS users rent servers as well as the system software to use in them. SaaS users also rent application software and databases along with the servers and system software.

So now that we know the different types of cloud computing, we can see that Google is making a play for an IaaS model to rent out virtual servers and storage space for corporate markets, ultimately targeting one of Microsoft’s biggest strengths… their enterprise developer community. By partnering with third-party companies such as Rightscale and Opscode, Google has focused on making it easier to write, deploy and manage applications in order to lure enterprise developers to its platform.

We’ll find out more at Google I/O next week!

The Mountain View Giant has just jazzed up its Android Developers webpage which allows developers of all types to “design, develop and distribute” all types of apps. The website will include items such as design templates and the ability to publish awesome concepts and content to the Play Store. What’s even more is interested developers will get to see the Android Developers keynote as well as over 40 developer sessions at Google’s upcoming I/O.

Looks like all you amateur and pro developers will have an even bigger reason to create and share the next great app for Android devices. I’m sure many of you are itching for more details, so why not hit the source link to check out the page in all it’s glory?

Download The Official Google I/O 2012 App

Google I/O 2012, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, is just a week away and Google has just released this year’s official conference app in the Play Store. This year’s app is looking pretty nice with a visual overhaul, Google+ integration, personal schedule with reminders, and the ability to stream conference video directly. What other features does the app include? Here’s the list from the Play Store:

  • View the conference agenda and edit your personal schedule
  • View detailed session, code lab, and speaker information, including speaker bios, photos, and Google+ profiles
  • +1 sessions right from the app
  • Participate in public #io2012 conversations on Google+
  • Guide yourself using the conference map
  • Get a reminder a few minutes before sessions in your schedule are due to start
  • View information about companies in the Developer Sandbox
  • Keep up with announcements from the I/O team during the conference
  • View your schedule on your Android 3.0+ device’s home screen using an app widget
  • Play back “I/O Live” session video streams on your Android 3.0+ devices
  • Automatically sync sessions in your schedule to your Android 4.0 device’s calendar
  • Beam session details from your Android 4.0, NFC-enabled device to another using Android Beam

The app works great on both phones and tablets running Android 2.2 and higher. Though the app will be more useful for those of us attending the conference (this is my first year… yay!), anyone with an interest in Android, Google, and all their technologies will definitely get something out of it. In other words, if you’re reading this, you should get the app.
