Instagram adds Facebook-like photo tagging features in update

After Facebook bought Instagram, I think we all expected there to be a little crossover in features between both services. Instagram has already introduced a location service with their photos, and now they’ve debuted a photo tagging feature called “Photos of You.” You or your friends can tag each other in pictures, and there’s now a separate section of your profile where you can view photos that you’ve been tagged in. If this sounds similar to Facebook’s photo albums, well… That’s because it is similar to Facebook’s photo albums. Fortunately, you’ve got a few days before those tagged photos go public, so you can change your privacy settings to tone down who can see what or who can tag you in photos. Hit the link below to get the update and start checking it out.

Official Twitter app gets updated with photo filters, wages war against Instagram

by Alexon Enfiedjian on

It’s no secret that Twitter has been tightening its belt when it comes to allowing its competition to access its services. Today Twitter tightens that belt one notch tighter with an update to its official Twitter app that adds photo filters. This seems to be a direct attack against its biggest photo sharing competitor – Instagram. Twitter’s latest release now includes eight “creative” filters that enhance your images before you upload them. The filters include: vignette, black & white, warm, cool, vintage, cimematic, happy, and gritty. Twitter has also added cropping and auto-balancing tools. The cool thing about how Twitter is approaching photo filters is that their editing grid allows you to see how each filter affects your photo in a side-by-side comparison (see the screen shot below). This update should cause a lot of people to cut out the middle man and edit their photos and upload them all from the same app, which is exactly what Twitter wants. If you’re ready to update, head past the break and use the QR code or Google play link to get your photo-filtering on.

Instagram finally launches web profiles for users

by Jared Peters on

One of the weirdest features Instagram lacked was an actual website for users. It’s pretty much just a simple web page that links you to different app stores to get the Instagram app. It took long enough, but Instagram has finally realized the untapped potential that boring, pointless website has. It’s not currently available for everyone, but some users can view their profiles as a simplified web interface from a browser. It’s currently in a rollout status, so not everyone can do it yet, but a projected 100 million users will have access to it by the end of the week. » Read the rest

If you’re one of the lucky few that own a Google Nexus 7, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that the all popular Instagram for Android application has been updated to officially support the tablet. If you attempted to install the application previously, you were greeted with a device incompatibility message. In addition to the Nexus 7 support, the latest update also includes the ability to share photos from Instagram directly to Flickr in the sharing menu after you’ve saved your image.

With its popularity on iOS, Instagram made a huge splash once it became available for Android users. It is safe to say that this is great news for any Nexus 7 owner. Hit up the Google Play Store download link or QR code after the break!  » Read the rest

The photo editing gurus have been hard at work on another update and it’s a significant one this time. Users now have the ability to share any photo they like direct to Facebook at the click of a button. Furthermore users can now search for other users and specific tags in the explore tab from within the application. Instagram for Android updated with tilt-shift feature

by Chris Stewart on
tagged , ,

Instagram may be on the verge of a billion dollar takeover from Facebook but thankfully the pending deal isn’t standing in the way of progress. The in-house developers have been hard at work updating the Android application in order to bring a few extra features that were missing at launch and, most importantly, bringing it up to date with the iOS counterpart. Tilt-shift, a feature that allows the photographer to adjust focus and add a blur effect to their shots was available on iOS from day one so it was a notable absence from Android version 1.0. It’s great to see that it has finally arrived on Android.

If you’re a would-be photographer just itching to get your creative juices flowing, you’d better hit the link below to grab the download.

Apple’s Phil Schiller Unhappy With Instagram’s Expansion, Believes App “Jumped The Shark When It Went To Android”

by Roy Alugbue on

Instagram’s release for Android generated an enormous amount of enthusiasm, but also significant angst among iPhone users. Apparently among the people who were unhappy about Instagram’s recent expansion was Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller. 9to5Mac reported one of its readers reached out to Schiller after noticing that his Instagram account, under the name @schiller, had vanished suddenly. Schiller responded directly to the reader through Twitter highlighting Instagram “jumped the shark when it went to Android”. Ouch.

Oh there’s more too. Another 9to5Mac reader named Clayton Braasch asked Schiller to elaborate on his statement. Braasch shares in a post on his blog Schiller’s response. Schiller contends that Instagram is still a “great app and community”, but liked the fact it was limited to a small and select group of early adopters. Since the growth and expansion of Instagram, Schiller believes “the signal to noise ratio is different”. Looks like he would have rather seen all of those Instagram alternatives for Android users instead of Instagram being available for Android.

Thoughts?

Malware ridden Instagram app found infecting Android devices

by Adam Johnson on

Sure the filter enhanced social photo app Instagram is apparently worth 1 billion dollars and now owned by Facebook, but no amount of cabbage will protect it from being faked and infected with malware. This application which was originally an iOS exclusive was recently ported to Android, and became an instant hit. Somewhere around 5 million+ downloads in the first week. These malware creators took swift advantage of the photo apps popularity and created a fake version of Instagram and it is now infecting unsuspecting Android users.

Finding from Sophos, an IT security and data protection company, spoke about the malware called Andr/Boxer-F:

“In our tests, the app didn’t do a very good job of emulating the genuine Instagram app, but that may be because it failed to find the correct network operator. Because this is a malicious app that seems to be relying in the sending of background SMS messages to earn its creators revenue.”

We all need to be cautious as of course this isn’t the first time malware has raised its ugly head in the Android community, and won’t be the last. Your safest bet to decrease your chances of malware is to stay away from third party android markets where the security isn’t monitored as well (if at all) as it is with Google Play. On another note, if you chose to just stay away from Instagram all together, our own Ed Caggiani put together a great article listing and discussing 7 free Instagram Alternatives.
