Ice Cream Sandwich AOSP Builds Arrive For Many Devices [Courtesy of XDA]

Many of you felt let down when Google’s Mobile Product Manager, Hugo Barra, announced that the big G had no plans to update the Nexus One to ICS because the device was cited as being “too old”. This news didn’t sit well with XDA members either, and because the released ICS SDK-port for the Nexus One was entirely too slow for any real use, members decided it was time to get crafty.

It was only last week when news broke about the release of the ICS Source Code and we knew it would only be a short time until AOSP builds would arrive on the scene. Here we are 5 days later and we are pleased to see that XDA member, dr1337, has created a functional AOSP build for the Nexus One and is ready to share with the world. What’s even better is the fact that this is just one of the devices to receive ICS AOSP builds, and even more XDA members have been busy as well.

Thanks to the hard work from, dizgustipatedMongooseHelixstritfajtjaybob413onecosmicChaosz-X, and zFr3eak; the Nexus S, Droid Eris, Hero, Hero CDMA, Galaxy S I9000, Desire, and Desire HD now get to feast on a little Ice Cream Sandwich treat. I know this has got to be great news for many of you and you are just dying to get to work on your own device. We have included the following XDA links to help you in your task:

Most of these are going to have a few hiccups here and there but that can be expected with any early AOSP build. Please read all the directions carefully and pay attention to the XDA comments for your respective device, you may find out that there are certain bugs that you may not be able to deal with. Reported user feedback has been overwhelmingly good but, TalkAndroid is not responsible for anything you do to your device and this is purely for your reference. If you are a Nexus S owner and want to see what is in store for you, jump past the cut to check out a Youtube video of the phone in action. Lets all be sure to give thanks where it is due, these guys must have been working really hard to bring these builds to the public. Thanks guys!!

HTC Desire HD Chocolate gets Android 2.3 update with Orange UK

orange-desire-hd

HTC has partnered with Orange UK to get their HTC Desire HD owners onto a better Android OS with an update for Android 2.3 Gingerbread rolling right now. The update should be OTA, so if you’re with Orange UK sporting a Desire HD Chocolate, check your notifications and taste that sweet Gingerbread goodness!

Just as a reminder, any time you’re about to install an update, it’s best practice to backup your apps and your OS just in case. I recommend Titanium backup for your apps which you can grab here for free. You’ll also need to root your device to use Titanium among many other awesome apps. You can follow here to get it rooted.

Telstra dumping Sense UI for Gingerbread on the HTC Desire

htc-desire-telstra

Telstra is bringing Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HTC Desire, which is probably going to be as loved as when Gingerbread was announced for Sony Xperia X10 users. For Telstra to get this upgrade out to the Desire however, it’s going to require the loss of something else native to the HTC Desire among many other HTC devices…HTC Sense UI.

As Telstra explains briefly, due to the memory requirements of Gingerbread, and the limited memory available on the HTC Desire, the Sense UI will need to go to make room. Very well done Telstra! I’m not sure I know anyone with an HTC Desire that would rather keep Sense UI over getting a Gingerbread update, so the choice is a logical one. Let’s hope that other carriers worldwide see this as a great alternative, not only for the Desire, but for any Android device needing an upgrade that may have ‘limited’ resources.

HTC Desire will not get Gingerbread due to lack of memory

by Robert Nazarian on
tagged , , , , ,

HTC has done a decent job with updates, but for those that own the HTC Desire, we have some bad news. Unfortunately there is not enough memory to update it to Gingerbread.

Here is was HTC UK said on their Facebook page:

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

You have to wonder if this would be an issue if Sense were not installed. We all know that Sense is HTC’s baby so that is not going anywhere anytime soon. At least there is still the option for rooting and custom ROMs.

Communication between Android and Arduino, NFC on the cheap

by Adam Johnson on
tagged , , , , , , ,

Near field communication aka NFC is a technology that will allow you to exchange data between devices. If you don’t have the ‘Pure Google’ phone, Nexus S (4G) you probably don’t have NFC capabilities with that Android device you have in your hand. Yea, look at it. Nope! And you know you wish you had the capability after reading all about the latest service to come from the search giant, Google Wallet.

You could take a shot at fixing that problem, or just commend the guy that made the following video for his efforts. He’s put to together a little project he likes to call the “Poor Mans NFC”. Joe Desbonnet has recorded video of his device communicating with an Arduino. By using this micro-controller and some magnetic wire strategically placed and this app as the interface, he was able to send data to his compass enabled HTC Desire . This wouldn’t be practical to set up your device with NFC this way, but sure is cool to see someone take the initiative. If you have the desire to look further into this check out his blog and instructions.

Check out the You Tube video after the break.

TELUS Reveals Froyo and Gingerbread Update Schedules

by Axl Logan on
tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Canadian carrier TELUS, has informed MobileSyrup that a Gingerbread update should be arriving sometime in the Spring for the HTC Desire and Desire HD.  Meanwhile, they have also stated that an official Froyo update will be rolling around “very soon” for the Motorola Milestone.   The company has also promised update plans for the Samsung Galaxy Apollo to receive Froyo in the Spring and Gingerbread to the LG Shine Plus by summer’s end.  The LG Shine Plus will most likely skip Froyo and directly receive the Gingerbread update from Eclair, which I’m sure no one will argue with.

HTC has already confirmed that the Desire series devices will receive the Gingerbread update sometime in Q2.  So, hopefully TELUS customers can rest assured that they’re not too far behind.  Furthermore, the European Milestone received their Froyo update today, hopefully confirming all the more that TELUS models are up to bat next.  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Gingerbread coming to HTC Incredible S, Desire HD, Desire Z and Desire all in June 2011

htcincredibleswildfires

Looks like HTC will be making good on their promise to get Gingerbread onto the HTC Incredible S after we saw the device at MWC 2011 without Gingerbread. I admit, we had concerns why they would not put the latest Android OS onto such a fine device. HTC promised it wouldn’t be long, and it will be a few more months, 4 to be exact before we see Android 2.3 on the Incredible S.

To add to the update madness, the HTC Desire family will also be getting Gingerbread around the same time, which is awesome for those who still have an original Desire and thought with all these new devices coming out, why would they bother with little old me and my Desire. Well, they are bothering with all of them. Nice work HTC.

A few images have been leaked out over the possible new look of HTC Android handsets. They all look very slick, and no doubt will have great specs for mid-range to top of the line smartphones. These are of cource renders, and not “official” images. We’ll likely see many more official announcements with specs and images at the MWC conference in barcelona taking place on February 14-17 2011. But you can have a look at the images below and tell us what you think.

Bell is putting the HTC Desire Z and the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant on sale for the holidays by taking an additional $75.00 off the price of each! That makes the HTC Desire Z is $4.95 and the Galaxy S Vibrant is $24.95 when signing a 3 year contract for either of these devices, which is a pretty sweet deal for the best phones you can get in Canada. The sale lasts until December 31st 2010.
