If the Nexus program is any indication, there is a group of people out there that prefer vanilla (stock, AOSP, whatever you feel like calling the pure Google Experience) Android over those skinned versions that manufacturers bloat their devices with. Some have even gone on to wish and hope that there was an ability to turn these user interfaces off and just run pure Google software. Well if current rumors ring true, we’ll see that very thing tomorrow.
The newest rumor is that Google will be showing off a Galaxy S 4 with vanilla Android. You’ve read that right. The newest flagship from Samsung could very well run a pure version of Google’s OS. It’s rumored to be released on T-Mobile’s network in June with no love for any other carrier at the moment. Either way it brings up the question of whether or not this will be a Google Play Store exclusive or be sold in stores.
I love rumors as much as the next person and sincerely hope that this one becomes a reality. This wouldn’t be the first time that Google and Samsung have debuted a product variant running pure Android. Remember the special edition Galaxy Tab 10.1 given out to folks at I/O? Although it would be the first time that such a product would make its way to the general public. We’ll know soon enough.
In a not-so-veiled attempt at bringing multiple versions of the Galaxy S 4 to the world, it’s not surprising that Samsung is planning on bringing a rugged version out. That’s right folks, all of you who are prone to dropping your phone, flinging it across the room, or accidentally spilling water on it can rest easier. It’s a peace of mind knowing that you can purchase the flagship device and have it hold up against all the abuse thrown at it. According to Young Soo Kim, President of Samsung Gulf, we’re just weeks away from seeing a waterproof and dust proof version of the GS4.
As nice as that sounds, we have yet to hear about which markets will see the device or even how much it will cost. Of course we’ll know more when the device actually gets announced. Even as such, this should entice those clumsy people, myself included, into purchasing Samsung’s latest flagship device. Even if it doesn’t,well, at least it will lead to multiple GS4 beating videos being posted to the internet. I can hear the squeals of joy now.

If you’re a Verizon customer and you want to make sure you get your Samsung Galaxy S 4 on release day, you might want to head over to Best Buy because they are now taking pre-orders. They did a soft announcement in that they sent out text messages telling customers that you can pre-order now, but it’s in store only.
Verizon hasn’t even announced an official release date other than sometime in May, and they aren’t even taking pre-orders yet. If you remember, Verizon was the last major carrier to offer the Galaxy S III, so this is just history repeating itself. I’m expecting a late May release, but hopefully I will be wrong.
Are you wondering when you can finally put your hands on the Samsung Galaxy S 4? Well AT&T made it official via Twitter that it will be in stores starting this Saturday, April 27. It appears they will only offer the 16GB version for now, and the 32GB version will arrive at a later date. Word is that if you pre-ordered it, you could get it as soon as tomorrow.
The Samsung Galaxy S 4 might be the most anticipated phone right now, but how would the Gorilla Glass 3 display hold up with a steak knife? Now it’s unlikely you will ever think your GS4 is your dinner, but somehow there is nothing worse than scratching your phone’s display. Is the Galaxy S 4 good enough to throw out your screen protectors? Check out the video after the break and see for yourself. Now all we need is a drop text and our lives will be complete.
Following up this morning’s official announcement regarding availability of the Samsung Galaxy S 4, Samsung has also released details regarding several official accessories that will be available. These accessories should prove popular with new owners interested in protecting their new device, extending its usefulness, or just using the “Life Companion” to make life more interesting. U.S. Cellular is already using the accessories to entice buyers by throwing in a free S View flip cover with online pre-orders. The flip cover goes beyond the traditional smartphone cover by providing a small window to your screen that displays information like time, missed calls and text messages, and battery status.
With some carriers already taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S 4, and Samsung officially announcing product availability later this month, U.S. Cellular has joined the fray competing for buyers today by opening their own pre-order page. U.S. Cellular is offering the 16GB version of the smartphone for $199 with a new 2-year contract. To help draw customers in, U.S. Cellular is throwing in a free S View flip cover for anyone who pre-orders online. The cover is normally a $59.99 item. You can read their full press release after the break.
The Samsung Galaxy S 4 can now be pre-ordered from AT&T with a ship date set for April 30. That’s the good news. The bad news is that’s only available in certain areas. I tried a couple of major cities, but all I get is “The device you’ve selected is not available in your area.” Pricing for the 16GB is $199 for a two-year contract or $449 with a one-year contract. If you are brave and want to go no-contract, you can get it for $639. If you do pre-order, you can expect to see your shiny new white or black Galaxy S 4 by May 3rd. Let us know if it’s available in your area and where you live.
April 27th is a day to mark on your calendar my friends, that is if you live in Canada. Telus just issued a press release with all the juicy details about the Galaxy S 4. I’m getting a little ahead of myself here, because the date is only important if you preordered the device. If not, you are going to have to wait until May 3rd when the phone becomes available in stores.
The phone will cost you $700 off contract, or $199 with a standard three year Canadian contract plus an additional $50 data plan. You have your choice of white frost or black mist.

An image alleging to show a leaked Staples document reveals some information about availability of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 at the office supplies retailer. According to the information in the internal memo, the Galaxy S 4 will be available for AT&T customers on April 26th. The T-Mobile version will be available a few days later on May 1st, but Verizon customers will have to wait another month until May 30th. The document does indicate in several places that the Staples reservation process does not guarantee delivery of the device on those dates, just the availability of a unit for a customer to buy when inventory does show up.
