Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Grows To 7.1 Percent Of All Android Devices

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , , ,

The last time we looked at the Android version number distributions, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich had a 4.9% piece of the total Android pie. Google just released the latest numbers for the two weeks leading up to June 1st, and now we see ICS has grown 2.2% to a total of 7.1%.

Though the growth is admirable, keep in mind that the ICS SDK was released 8 months ago in October. To only be on 7.1% of all Android devices out there doesn’t say much for the time it’s taking manufacturers and carriers to upgrade existing devices.

Other notable changes:

  • Honeycomb is down 0.6% for a total of 2.7%
  • Gingerbread is up 0.6% to a total of 65%
  • Froyo is down 1.8% to a total of 19.1%
  • Eclair is down 0.3% to a total of 5.2%

The trends are mostly moving in the right directions, with Gingerbread’s growth slowing down slightly and ICS’s rate increasing just a bit. Maybe now that the HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE are making it to stores, and the Samsung Galaxy S III is on the way soon, the next platform numbers may show a larger bump for ICS.

Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread Show Gains in Latest Android Version Numbers

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , , ,

Google released the latest Android version numbers showing the distribution of all Android versions, collected from all the devices that access the Google Play Store during the last two weeks of the month. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich saw steady gains, as did Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

  • Sales of new devices with Android 4.0 contributed to a 2% increase for ICS to a total of 4.9% as compared to last month. Updates to existing phones and tablets running Gingerbread and Honeycomb have also helped keep the rise of ICS steady.
  • Speaking of Honeycomb, its numbers remained flat at 3.3%, which is no surprise since Honeycomb tablet sales have been fairly slow, as have the rollouts of updates to existing Honeycomb tablets to Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • The largest piece of the pie got a tad larger with Gingerbread devices rising  0.7% to 64.4%. Yep, most phones out there are still being sold with Android 2.3 on them, though that will slowly change as newer ICS-based devices begin to hit the market.
  • Froyo and Eclair predictably continue their decline to 20.9% and 5.5% respectively.

Expect these trends to continue as new devices are released and older ones get updates. Now just when will Jellybean start showing up?

Android 2.3 Gingerbread Running on 58% of Android Devices

by Emily Aquin on

Every two weeks Google releases the Android distribution numbers to the masses.  The biweekly survey reports what version of Android that a device is running when it accesses the Market.  Developers should note that a whopping 58 percent of devices are now running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.  This is especially important in determining which software version to prioritize when creating or updating applications.  Android 3.0 Honeycomb is currently at 3.4 percent, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is only at 1 percent.  It seems it will be a little while before they share in Android world domination.

In November of 2011, only 44 percent of devices were running Gingerbread.  What caused this large increase in a relatively short amount of time?  Perhaps a shiny new Android was the go-to gift during the holiday rush.  What do you think?

Gingerbread Officially Most Popular Android Version

by Roy Alugbue on
tagged , , , , , ,

Gingerbread is officially the most popular version of Android. Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x) is on 44.4% of all devices, passing Froyo (Android 2.2.x) which now accounts for 40.7% of Androids. Somewhat surprising is Eclair (Android 2.1.x), accounting for 10.7% of all Androids. Honeycomb– which covers tablets only– accounts for roughly 2% of all Androids. Considering Google’s upcoming sweet treat should theoretically work on any 2.3 device, you can’t help but wonder how it will eat at Gingerbread’s overall lead of Android devices this time next year. This is the first time we have seen Gingerbread on more devices than Android 2.2 Froyo, which has dropped about 5 percent from last months 45.3 percent to this months 40.7 percent.

The data was harvested based on the number of Android devices which accessed the Android Market over a two-week period that ended on 3 November. If you want to see the full details from the report, hit the link below.

BlackBerry PlayBook is using Gingerbread, are you?

by Robert Nazarian on
tagged , , , , , ,

A while back, RIM promised that the BlackBerry PlayBook would be able to run Android apps. Well a leaked Android Player app shows that it is running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

The most recent stats show that only 18.6% of devices are running Android 2.3.x and above. This is actually pretty pathetic since Gingerbread was announced 7 months ago. Will the PlayBook get Ice Cream Sandwich before most of us as well?

Motorola Titanium branded by Sprint, Coming July 24th

by Adam Johnson on
tagged , , , ,

What do you want to know about the Motorola Titanium other than the Sprint release date? How about the price at $149.99. And as the ad states, its Sturdy + QWERTY. This phone has been designed to be rugged and durable, meeting “Militarty Specs” as the Motorola fact sheet will point out. Also you find the Nextel Direct Connect feature of course. Unfortunately still running on Android 2.1 Eclair the Titanium is sporting WiFi, 3.1″ multi-touch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, memory expandable to 32 GB.

So if you work in a position at might put your phone at risk and you need it to last, this phone is probably the only one you’ll  find that’ll do the job.

Gingerbread doubles current Android devices while Froyo loses grip

Pie charts: admit it, you love them. Especially when they pertain to Android statistics. What’s that? You don’t? Well then… why don’t you have a seat right over there…

But, enough shenanigans. According to the latest poll of Android devices from the Android Developers Site, Froyo is holding strong as king of the Android hill, showing up on a whopping 59.4% of all Google-loving devices; However, that number is actually down from the previous 64.6 percent for the last couple weeks in June. The version picking up slack? Gingerbread, of course! Our tasty baked treat comes in at 18.6%, double what it was in the previously mentioned time frame. Honeycomb comes in at 0.9%.

What do you think of these numbers? Be sure to let us know what you would like to see on the latest devices in the comments below.

Sony Xperia X10 getting Android 2.1 update from AT&T – not joking

x10-att-gingerbread-update

There really isn’t much to say about this other than AT&T has really taken their time with this one. ‘Wowwww, bringing the software up to Android 2.1??? How can we be so lucky!’ That’s maybe something like what AT&T would hope to hear from their Sony Xperia X10 owners, but it’s unlikely. In fact, I’m not even going to type what they are probably saying due to this site being work safe and all.

You know what though, on the positive side, it’s amazing they put out an update at all seeing as they would rather have X10 owners just upgrade to a Gingerbread Xperia Arc, PLAY or Neo anyway. So, for that I guess X10 owners should be somewhat thankful. The update will start rolling out today. Click here for a guide on how to upgrade your device.
