Superuser version 3.0 – NFC, PINs, & Backup, Oh My! [Download]

This morning I woke up to the “updates available” notification on my Android devices. Among them was an update for Superuser, bringing the version number to 3.0. Now I couldn’t even remember the last time Superuser had an update  so I took a moment to check the change log. To my delight, this update packed a handful of great new features in addition to the usual bug fixes. What’s in the new update you ask? Straight from the changelog:

  • Fixed layout on non-Honeycomb tablets
  • Better handling of fragments on tablets
  • Compatibility for Donut restored
  • Fixed bug that caused unpredictable results when an app is remembered that was previously allowed
  • Backup/restore of apps and preferences
  • Fix for Superuser thinking the binary is outdated when it’s not
  • Major speed increase for notifications and logging
  • Show seconds in log defaults to off now
  • Fix FC when trying to swipe left/right in HomeActivity
  • Fix changelog version tracking, only show what’s changed since the last time the changelog was displayed on launch

Gingerbread doubles current Android devices while Froyo loses grip

Pie charts: admit it, you love them. Especially when they pertain to Android statistics. What’s that? You don’t? Well then… why don’t you have a seat right over there…

But, enough shenanigans. According to the latest poll of Android devices from the Android Developers Site, Froyo is holding strong as king of the Android hill, showing up on a whopping 59.4% of all Google-loving devices; However, that number is actually down from the previous 64.6 percent for the last couple weeks in June. The version picking up slack? Gingerbread, of course! Our tasty baked treat comes in at 18.6%, double what it was in the previously mentioned time frame. Honeycomb comes in at 0.9%.

What do you think of these numbers? Be sure to let us know what you would like to see on the latest devices in the comments below.

Froyo and Eclair now take up 77% of Android devices

While there are still some devices out there that haven’t seen the light of Android 2.1+, it looks like the latest stats from the Android Developer Blog are showing that Eclair and Froyo are now taking up 77% of all Android devices. The breakdown goes as follows:

That puts the percentages at:

  • Android 1.5 – 7.9%
  • Android 1.6 – 15.0%
  • Android 2.1 – 40.8%
  • Android 2.2 – 36.2%

Altogether, it looks as though Google may finally be getting their Android fragmentation issues under control. As long as we continue to see these numbers moving in this direction, it will be a win-win situation for consumers.

Dell Streak

Dell is confirming that its update for the Dell Streak will be pushed out by the end of the year. No specific dates have been announced, but Dell states it will be “much sooner” than December 31st 2010.

Dell also stated that they will be stopping the Eclair updates, and therefore, will no longer be available OTA as the intention has been to upgrade directly from Donut to Froyo. Stopping the Eclair update roll-out adds belief that the Froyo update is upon the Streak.

According to the Android Developers Blog, Android 2.1 and 2.2 are now on 70.4% of Android devices. The latest stats show Eclair at 41.7%, while Froyo is sitting at 28.7%. Check out the time chart below:

It’s nice to see 1.5 and 1.6 heading the way of betamax tapes, but we could definitely stand to see some more progress going full steam ahead.

ViewSonic tablet to run Android

by Chris Moor on
tagged , , , , , ,

ViewSonic has not yet decided on a name for their 10-inch Windows 7 tablet, but they at least have decided on one thing: The new tablet will also run Android. The tablet will sport a resolution of 1024×600, the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Even better, the 10-inch tablet will have 1GB of RAM.

The tablet may sound like a nice competitor to all of the other Android tablets that are slated to be coming out soon. However, that is not the case, because sadly, the tablet runs…here it comes…Android 1.6, because that is the only version of Android that supports x86 processors.. Still, it may be the tablet for you if you are looking for a fast Android tablet, but also want something more like a computer, as it also runs Windows 7.

Samsung releases upgrade to Android 1.6 for Galaxy GT-I7500

Samsung, in true “whoops-we-forgot-about-one” fashion, has released an official update to Android 1.6 (Donut) for the Galaxy GT-I7500. According to O2 Germany, the new upgrade is officially available. While it may not be Froyo, or even Eclair, it is still an improvement to the device, however small of a leap it may be.

The upgrade can be run through Samsung’s official PC Studio Software.

Any of our GT-I7500 touting readers, be sure to let us know how the upgrade goes if you try it out for yourself!

Eclair now has over 55% of Android share

by Dustin Karnes on
tagged , , , , , , , ,

Over at the Android Developer website, there’s an updated pie graph (pie, eclair… I’m getting hungry) that shows Android 2.1 taking up 55.5% of Android platforms on mobile devices. Donut (1.6) is falling in at 22.1%, followed in third place by Cupcake (1.5) at 18.9%. Froyo, or 2.2, is taking up only 3.3% of the platform share.

As you can see, the fragmentation still exists in a large way, but hopefully this is proof of a move toward gathering all that fragmentation up and coming up with a more universal solution for Android users.

What version of Android are you running? Let us know in the comments!
