Android 2.3 Gingerbread Running on 58% of Android Devices

Every two weeks Google releases the Android distribution numbers to the masses.  The biweekly survey reports what version of Android that a device is running when it accesses the Market.  Developers should note that a whopping 58 percent of devices are now running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.  This is especially important in determining which software version to prioritize when creating or updating applications.  Android 3.0 Honeycomb is currently at 3.4 percent, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is only at 1 percent.  It seems it will be a little while before they share in Android world domination.

In November of 2011, only 44 percent of devices were running Gingerbread.  What caused this large increase in a relatively short amount of time?  Perhaps a shiny new Android was the go-to gift during the holiday rush.  What do you think?

This is the first time we have seen Gingerbread on more devices than Android 2.2 Froyo, which has dropped about 5 percent from last months 45.3 percent to this months 40.7 percent.

The data was harvested based on the number of Android devices which accessed the Android Market over a two-week period that ended on 3 November. If you want to see the full details from the report, hit the link below.

Gingerbread doubles current Android devices while Froyo loses grip

Pie charts: admit it, you love them. Especially when they pertain to Android statistics. What’s that? You don’t? Well then… why don’t you have a seat right over there…

But, enough shenanigans. According to the latest poll of Android devices from the Android Developers Site, Froyo is holding strong as king of the Android hill, showing up on a whopping 59.4% of all Google-loving devices; However, that number is actually down from the previous 64.6 percent for the last couple weeks in June. The version picking up slack? Gingerbread, of course! Our tasty baked treat comes in at 18.6%, double what it was in the previously mentioned time frame. Honeycomb comes in at 0.9%.

What do you think of these numbers? Be sure to let us know what you would like to see on the latest devices in the comments below.

Froyo and Eclair now take up 77% of Android devices

by Dustin Karnes on

While there are still some devices out there that haven’t seen the light of Android 2.1+, it looks like the latest stats from the Android Developer Blog are showing that Eclair and Froyo are now taking up 77% of all Android devices. The breakdown goes as follows:

That puts the percentages at:

  • Android 1.5 – 7.9%
  • Android 1.6 – 15.0%
  • Android 2.1 – 40.8%
  • Android 2.2 – 36.2%

Altogether, it looks as though Google may finally be getting their Android fragmentation issues under control. As long as we continue to see these numbers moving in this direction, it will be a win-win situation for consumers.

It’s nice to see 1.5 and 1.6 heading the way of betamax tapes, but we could definitely stand to see some more progress going full steam ahead.

Three UK says HTC Hero 2.1 upgrade waiting on Google

by Dustin Karnes on
tagged , , , , , , , ,

While most of us are clamoring over which handsets will receive Android 2.2, we tend to forget about some other users who are still far behind that mark. For example, the HTC Hero on UK’s wireless carrier, Three.

However, it looks like those Three Hero users (and we don’t mean the three users who have a hero…pun?) still on 1.5 will be getting their official upgrade to Eclair once Google OK’s the transition. They also apologize for the (long) delay, saying that other devices, such as the iPhone 4 and Galaxy S, had gotten in the way of their development process. Check out the full statement below.

Thanks for all your patience regarding the 2.1 update for HTC Hero. We have now tested and approved the software and this has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.

Really sorry for the delay on this update. We’ve been working really hard to approve and launch lots of handsets and updates this month including iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S, and the 2.1 update for Hero has had to queue up alongside these other big launches, particularly the Galaxy S which took a number of versions of software to get right. We’re a smaller network than some of our competitors, and while that has its advantages it also means that our testing team doesn’t have limitless resources. We’ve done our best to manage priorities, but the 2.1 Hero update hasn’t gone through testing and approvals as quickly or as smoothly as we’d have wanted – HTC did have to supply us with a couple of versions until we were satisfied it was bug free. We really wanted to get this to you for the end of July, but we’ve missed our deadline – I’m really sorry I can’t bring you better news on a Friday afternoon but at least you’re now in full possession of the facts.

Eclair now has over 55% of Android share

by Dustin Karnes on
tagged , , , , , , , ,

Over at the Android Developer website, there’s an updated pie graph (pie, eclair… I’m getting hungry) that shows Android 2.1 taking up 55.5% of Android platforms on mobile devices. Donut (1.6) is falling in at 22.1%, followed in third place by Cupcake (1.5) at 18.9%. Froyo, or 2.2, is taking up only 3.3% of the platform share.

As you can see, the fragmentation still exists in a large way, but hopefully this is proof of a move toward gathering all that fragmentation up and coming up with a more universal solution for Android users.

Android ‘Cupcake’ Update G1 Onscreen Keyboard Video

by Chris Moor on

Last week saw Google announce the new ‘Cupcake’ update that will be heading to G1 handsets in early 2009. The Android update will bring added functionality to the G1 device including the ability to include an onscreen keyboard display, along with video recording and stereo bluetooth support.

The addition of an onscreen keyboard display will allow G1 users to input text without the need for the slideout physical keyboard.

Here’s a recently discovered video that shows the new onscreen keyboard feature running on the G1 handset.
