We already knew that one of the better launchers for tablets was certainly on its way for smartphones, but the big day has finally arrived folks: the Chameleon launcher for smartphones is officially live and available for all in the Play Store. As with the controversial tablet version, Chameleon launcher for smartphones allows for a unique launcher interface that is completely based on the use of some clever widgets that take up the entire of real estate of a smartphone’s screen.

The launcher is available in the Play Store for Android smartphones operating on Honeycomb or higher devices but there’s a big catch. Potential users can either splurge on a $2.91 version that is for use with smartphones only or go for the $3.99 version which will run on both smartphones and tablets.

Last May we reported on a project from Teknision, Inc., to create a new home screen UI and launcher for Android tablet devices. At the time, Teknision was in the process of funding the project via Kickstarter. The effort succeeded with the goal of $50,000 reached in July. Today the Chameleon Launcher for Tablets was made available in the Google Play store for $10. » Read the rest

Chameleon Launcher Beta Now Available For Those Who Pledged

by Ed Caggiani on

Canadian developer Teknision, makers of Kickstarter-funded Chameleon Launcher, said the beta version would be ready the first week of August, and they are right on target. If you pledged on Kickstarter, you can now find and install Chameleon Launcher Beta from the Google Play Store.

The interesting thing about this home screen replacement is how it treats the overall experience, covering every inch of the screen with widgets and apps. You can then create different home screens based on different situations (work, home, commute, etc) and have Chameleon show you the most relevant one based on GPS location, Wi-Fi network connected to, or time ranges.

Hit the break for screenshots, a video, and the download link.

Chameleon Kicks off New Kickstarter Project, Reaches Goal the First Day

by Macky Evangelista on

Earlier this month, we stated that the Chameleon Tablet Kickstarter project had to be restarted. It hit a road block when one of its original creators abruptly left the team which created funding issues and inevitably caused them to cancel the Kickstarter project for the time being. But now, I’m happy to say that the project is back on and the company is more determined than ever to get this home launcher to the point that they imagined it could be. You can now pledge money to the project via their new Kickstarter page.

The UI looks fantastic and very intuitive. What I like about it the most is that it looks very similar to Google’s holo UI, which makes it blend in real nicely with Honeycomb or ICS on an Android tablet. Chameleon looks wonderful and very aesthetically pleasing so if you haven’t checked it out yet you really should. Head over to the source link to learn more about it!

Chameleon Homescreen Closes Kickstarter Project Only to Open New One Next Week

by Geek Girl on

The folks from the Chameleon tablet project have posted an unfortunate message on their Kickstarter page explaining that the project’s funding process has to start over again. The Kickstarter project was doing well obtaining financial backing until it ran in to an issue with Amazon Payments. The account Teknision Inc. was using actually belonged to an employee and that employee is no longer with the company. Kickstarter only uses Amazon’s payment service and now cannot accept any of the money pledged for this project. Since they are not allowed to switch accounts midstream, the only option available is to recreate the project and start over again. None of the funds pledged to date can be accepted and would have to be pledged again to the newly created project. No one who pledged funds to the current project will be charged.

Chameleon claims that the new Kickstarter project will be up next week and will offer to include the wallpaper pack beginning at the $5 donation level to compensate for the inconvenience this situation has caused its funders. They have reached out to Talk Android letting us know that those who pledged should be receiving email updates and will be notified when the new project is live. They are encouraging folks to resubmit their pledge to help the project move forward… again.

The Chameleon tablet is setting out to make your home screen display change according to where you are and what you are doing. Check out this Kickstarter project using the link below.

Chameleon is Now a Kickstarter Project Looking to Make the Tablet UI Sexy Again

by Jack Holt on

The great thing about Android is the fact that if you don’t like the way it looks, you can use a slew of various launcher applications  to change it to work for you. NOVA Launcher and Go Launcher are just a few of the launcher options you have. However the one thing I find with every launcher I’ve used is that even though I set it to work great for me, it still feels not as efficient as it should be. Mind you I am talking about my tablet UI. Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus works perfectly in my opinion. Enter Chameleon. The launcher we told you about back in March looks to make inefficiency a thing of the past. While this UI is nothing short of revolutionary it didn’t hit the target market the company intended it for. Intended for OEMs the company behind the UI couldn’t find a buyer.

Rather than give up they’re taking to the UI to Kickstarter. Their goal is $50,000. Now I know what you’re thinking. Why the heck would we pay for a UI that’s only in the prototype stage let alone at all? Well the company has more than just a Photoshop rendering of the the UI as you will see from the videos below the UI looks amazing. And if you’re still skeptical the company behind Chameleon, Teknision, is listed as one of the designers behind the BlackBerry PlayBook‘s UI.

So if you feel like supporting what should be a very well done UI that’s already in the works, hit the source link below. Here’s hoping they meet their mark because this is going to be a great GUI. Again, you can check out the videos of this UI in motion after the break. Enjoy!

Teknision Changing Perception Of UI Skins For Tablets By Developing Chameleon Skin Based Off ICS

by Roy Alugbue on
tagged , , , , , ,

Ice Cream Sandwich is away and by far the best Android OS to date. By including the most fluid UI yet while integrating noteworthy features such as facial unlock and an improved set of widgets for use, ICS makes for a solid experience using the OS and especially UI. As a trademark of Android’s open platform, ICS allows for custom “enhancements” in the form of skins (Sense, TouchWiz, MOTOBLUR, etc.) and style by the various OEM who sell Android-based devices. One thing that’s painfully obvious for many of the “enhancements” done by OEMs is many of the custom skins include well… useless features and poorly designed widgets which tend to actually slow down Android devices despite those same devices having incredible processors and memory.

And that’s exactly why you tend to see many (though not all) Android owners go the way of the ROMing route in order to stick it to OEMs and experience what they feel a solid Android experience. While some folks (like me) prefer their Android in vanilla flavor or others (like many of the writers here at TA) prefer custom ROMs and some ummm, you know— like their resource hogging skins, Canadian developer Teknision is out to re-define how Android skins should be developed. Highlighted in our Forums, the same team behind RIM’s Blackberry Playbook UI has developed not only a intriguing skin for Android 4.0′s homescreen, but a stellar one at that in its Chameleon concept which is for tablets. Hit the break to read more details about what it does and to check out a video to see it in action.  » Read the rest
