Could Apple’s new patent put them in control of every smartphone?

About 3 1/2 years ago, Apple filed for a patent on touch screen displays, and it was just awarded as patent number 7,966,578.

“[a] computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, [that] comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display.”

The above is only a small sampling of the abstract, but experts agree that this patent award is very broad and it could prove to be a serious issue for other makers of capacitive touch-screen smartphones. It could give Apple control of all such devices manufactured by HTC, Samsung, Motorola, RIM, and others. This could also affect not only smartphones, but tablets as well.
