Google appears to be working on a new method to custom accessories for Nexus devices that is currently dubbed Google Workshop. From the looks of it, Google may have learned a few things from their Motorola experiment, including the Moto Maker platform for creating customized Moto X devices. Google Workshop takes some of those same concepts and applies them to the production of cases and live wallpapers for the Nexus 5. When the Galaxy S 5 was announced last month at the Samsung Packed Event 2014, the company did not unveil any accessories for its new flagship.
However, the accessories for the smartphone have appeared in a wide variety on mobile accessory site MobileFun. The first accessory is the Protective Hard Case Cover Plus made of plastic and which has a rugged look. The cover is priced at €25 which costs $35.
The other one is the S View Wireless Charging Cover which has a rectangular cut on the front that allows you to view the screen, answer calls, check the time & weather and view the notifications received. It’s called wireless cover because you can wirelessly charge your Galaxy S 5 without having to take off the cover. The cover comes in black and white variant and the wireless variant will cost you €67 ($93) while the one without wireless charging costs €55 ($76). Read more
The update to Android 4.4 KitKat on the Galaxy Note 3 was a welcome change for the device, which had all the latest hardware, but lacked the latest software. However, while the update did a whole lot of good, it also brought upon an issue that disabled compatibility with third-party accessories.
Samsung began rolling out an update to fix the issue today. It also fixes a bug that prevented apps from writing to external storage on KitKat. Obviously this problem shouldn’t have come up in the first place, but it’s good news that Samsung jumped on it so quickly. The update’s build number is N9005XXUENB3. To check if your phone can grab the update, go to Settings -> General -> About device -> Software update.
For all its success in mastering the smartphone market around the world, at times Samsung seems to think it needs to emulate Apple’s walled garden approach toward their customers. The appearance of Samsung engaging in this type of behavior can create some publicity problems for the company as has occurred over the past few days with regard to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 device. As previously reported, when the Android 4.4 KitKat update started to rollout to end users, reports quickly surfaced that compatibility with third-party accessories was broken. Samsung issued a statement that basically told consumers they should only use genuine Samsung accessories.
