Today’s free Amazon app is an alternative golf game called Tiki Golf 2 by Arb Studios. This game isn’t your average golf game and while I have not played the original, this seems to be a fun series of games. The goal is the same as regular golf, hit the ball a few times and hopefully make it in the hole, at or below par. You play on minigolf-like courses and have the ability to steer the ball once in flight, or should I say roll. It’s very seldom that you get your ball airborne unless you it hits a ramp or veers off course. Because of the mini-golf theme, you pretty much keep the ball on the ground no matter how hard you hit it, all the while steering through, over, and past obstacles.
The game offers 4 courses and over 72 holes, all different than the others. You start out as Tiki Bobby and are given the option to unlock specialized characters, clubs and balls throughout the game.
You’ll start with the standard-issue ball and club but you can unlock more levels of each as you prove your prowess. Advanced golf balls include Slow Motion, Ghost, Mega Control, Speed, Anti Gravity Jump, and Instant Stopping Power. Advanced club abilities include Accuracy, Mega Power, Amplify, Out of Bounds Immunity, Opposite Day, and Stat Bonuses. Track your Pineapple Score, Ring Score, Target Score, and Best Time.
These greens include ramps, mega power boosts, giant dartboard targets, huge hammers, loop-de-loops, pipes, pineapples, massive Tiki totems, and more. Choose to play Campaign Mode or Practice Mode. Test your abilities in three categories: Power, Control, and Accuracy.
To play the game, you aim your character in the direction you want the ball to travel by touching and swiping the screen. As soon as your ready to hit the ball, you tap the “hit” button and a power meter will appear allowing you to chose the amount of umph you put into your drive. As soon as the ball is in travel, you can press and hold the screen while turning your device (like a steering wheel) to steer your ball in the direction you want it to go. There are items that you can collect that unlock bonus abilities and power boosts to help you travel even further. As long as you can avoid the obstacles and maneuver the loop-de-loops and ramps, it’s completely possible to hit a hole in one.
Overall this game is pretty fun, more fun than I imagined it would be actually. The graphics are great and I noticed no real bugs or anything unusual to report. My only real complaint is that there seems to be a slight delayed reaction when you hit the power meter before swinging the club. It might take you a few practice rounds to get the timing figured out.
At a usual price of $2.99, today’s free offering is one I strongly suggest taking advantage of. This is one of those games I will keep in my pocket for when I want to kill some time while having fun doing so.
