[Review] Overkill for Android

by Spencer McClendon

Were should I start with Overkill. This game is great and not so great all in one. I guess I will start with telling you I do recommend it even with my earlier statement being said. The game places you as a mercenary in a world without order, and you are paid to kill everything in your way. You play each level in waves, standing stationary in one spot while enemies peek around different corners and obstructions. Read on past the break for the rest of my review, Market link, video, and the gallery.

I am playing it on my HTC Evo Shift 4G, (issues with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 prevent me from using it, but we will cover that in a moment) the controls are simple and minimal. Your left thumb is your gun and your right thumb has control over reload and fire. However if you tilt you phone forward or back it will auto reload.  I have no complaints with the controls, or the UI.  Both flow seamlessly and I haven’t come across any performance issues. Other than on my Tab. This game is compatible with the Tab, however, it is only compatible if it is running Android 3.1. Mine is running 3.2, so it force closes upon opening. I have been in contact with Craneballs Studios LLC. They are aware of my issue and are working on the problem and will hopefully have it resolved after the holidays. (My thought not their words.) Sooner would be nice though.

Even though I can’t use my Tab to do the review, the Shift does get the job done and makes the game look good. There are over 12 upgrade-able weapons to choose from and purchase with in game cash you get by killing everything in your sights. There are also 100 waves of enemies across 5 different levels. (20 per level for the non-math person)  At the end of 20 waves, you get a “Hell wave”, and the name says it all. This defiantly is a game to keep for me, I like it’s overall feel and it has an excellent replay value to it as well. I was mad that it took me forever to complete the first wave after a few deaths. I replayed it just to prove that it was a fluke and not me. Sadly it was me as I died a few more times on my second round through. It took me a while to understand which guy to shot at first and were best to shoot him. Thus bringing me to the downside of the game.

Accuracy seems to have some issues but not bad enough to make it unplayable. Also at the beginning of the game you start with a lower powered rifle so it takes a few more rounds to kill the bad guy. My issue was the head shot. In my mind if you shot someone in the head regardless of what caliber rifle, their dead and you can move on to the next bad guy. This is true on most games, but every so often with Overkill, I get a bonus for a head shot but the SOB is still standing and shooting at me. I can shot him maybe one or two more times before he dies. Sometimes those extra shots are head shots as well. This is the only negative mark for game play I have found. Minus the whole Tab issue of course.

I hope to get a chance to re-evaluate the game on my Tab, and add more to this review. For now I give it a 4 out of 5 rating. Half point lose for the whole head shot issue, and half point lose for the Tab issue. Both are fixable and hopefully will be. I am not a big fan of playing in depth games on my small ass phone screen. I prefer the smaller games like UNO, or Angry Birds on a screen of that size. With games like Overkill I want to see the detail that was put into it, and for that, the Tab comes in handy.

So keep checking back for any updates I may throw your way. Until then I recommend this game for all. Job well done Craneballs I look forward to future games you put out.  Checkout the embedded video below and the link to the game. Happy killing everyone.
