Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Coming to O2 UK in September

The upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 will be launched on the O2 network in the UK this coming September. As an Android user I am anxious to hear if this is going to be an exclusive handset to o2 or if it will be a general launch among other carriers as well. The release of the X8 will add more choices to an already impressive mix of android devices available through o2, and will compliment the already line of Sony Ericsson X10, X10 mini, and X10 mini pro devices.

With the recent de-coupling of all the handsets (now devices are all available pay as you go), there are no more long contracts to tie you down. With the constant addition of new Android power devices, O2 UK is a becoming a great place for choices on your next Android phone. As the platform begins to gain more momentum, the choice and diversity offered by o2 UK will continue to help the Android product line to grow while giving their customers better choices.

Android saves Q2 profit for Sony Ericsson

Android has a history of taking dying brands and manufacturers, and offering them a walk through the land of milk and honey, and it looks like Sony Ericsson is no exception.

That’s right, Sony Ericsson. While there was a long stint of Sony Ericsson having less-than-optimal earnings quarter over quarter, they have released their Q2 2010 results… which show them doing better than they have been for awhile. And who are they thanking? Android.

To be more specific, SE is pointing a grateful finger to the Sony Xperia X10 and the Vivaz for their pull from the valley. Sony Ericsson is also putting many eggs in the rest of their X10 line’s basket, which includes the X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro, in hopes that they can continue moving up the mountain in Q3.

Sony Xperia X10

Sony announced via their product blog that Xperia X10 users are going to receive and update for their phone over the upcoming weeks. This update is to address performance, speed and responsiveness fixes for the X10 including speed enhancements to the messaging and camera UI.

As a bonus Sony is including a free backup and restore app for their X10 customers so they never have to worry about losing their setting and information anymore. Select markets will also be getting PlayNow with premium apps and games.

The update will be rolled out OTA and users will receive a notification when the update is ready for them to download. Sony recommends you contact your provider for time frames of the roll out.

Sony Ericsson makes Xperia X8 official for Q3, 2010

by Dustin Karnes on

A couple days ago, you may have seen the Sony Ericsson “Shakira” get a new name (X8) with a little less hip jiggle, which came a week after the announcement of the smaller X10 mini. Well, folks, looks like Sony Ericsson has given us a goal for release of the newly dubbed X8, and that goal is Q3 of this year. Its form factor takes the stage as the mama bear,  right between papa (X10) and baby (X10 mini), and Sony Ericsson hopes that many will accept its size as just right.

The X8 is set to be dressed down with Android 1.6 with a highly customized UI, which includes Timescape and Mediascape. Don’t like it? Too bad, Jack. As with it’s  smaller cousin, the X10 mini, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. But don’t feel too down, because right around the corner from its 3″ screen, this phone is showing off a 3.2 MP camera, wifi, 600MHz of processing power and a 1200mAh battery. You can also change out the back covers.

The price on the X8 will be around €259 ($318).

Sony Ericsson Yendo on the horizon

by Dustin Karnes on
tagged , , , ,

From what we’ve heard around the rumor mill, Sony Ericsson will soon be announcing the Yendo. This phone was originally leaked as an Android based device touting Walkman as it’s main feature, but it seems that the former part of this has yet to be confirmed. It looks like the phone will come in multiple colors like its android brother, the X10.

If Sony Ericsson is hopping farther into the Android ring, this writer is excited. I’ve always felt they had huge potential, but were never able to fully deliver on it. If they can bring out more devices with an Android base and carry on down the development hill, you won’t see any complaints from this end.

Sony Ericsson’s “Shakira” gets a real name: X8

We showed you the sneak peak of SE’s “Shakira” exactly one week ago today. It turns out we didn’t have to wait long for the phone to get a real (and less exciting) name, the X8.

As you can see, the phone looks quite sleek. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any concrete specs at this time. Keep checking back for the latest info.

Sony Ericsson X10 Mini – On Sale Now in UK

by Chris Moor on

For those of you who might find the larger Sony Ericsson X10 too large (really?), the X10 Mini may well have been on your radar, ready to fill a gap in your handbag (or ‘man bag’, for those metrosexual chaps out there – or even ‘satchel’ if you’re a one-man-wolfpack).

One Man Wolfpack

The good news, is that The Carphone Warehouse in the UK, are now selling the X10 Mini. The handset is free on contracts from £15 a month on Vodaphone, and available free on Orange, T-Mobile, 3 and O2 as well. Pay as you go customers will apparently find the X10 Mini available from £200, but it doesn’t appear to be available from The Carphone Warehouse in this guise at the time of writing.

At a mere 88 g/3.1 oz,  you’d be hard pushed to notice if it was in your pocket, so it’s a good job the X10 Mini is available in fetching colours, including an interesting shade of ‘Lime’. However, it is worth noting that the face of the unit still remains black.

Unlike its bigger brother, the X10 Mini ‘only’ sports a QVGA 240 x 320 pixel screen, but the X10 Mini is no slouch, what with a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor powering Google™ Android 1.6. The 2.55″ screen seems a bit small, but for an Android phone the size of a credit card, some compromise has to be made.

If the X10 is too large for you, and X10 Mini is too small, like Goldilocks, you might want to hold out for something just the right size. If that’s the case, then the Sony Ericsson ‘Shakira’ might well be something worth keeping an eye on.

Sony Ericsson ‘Shakira’ – Photo Leaked

by Chris Moor on

If you’re the sort of person who takes interest in consumer products code-named after Colombian Latin-pop singers, you may be interested to read that an image of Sony Ericsson’s ‘Shakira’ Android phone has apparently been leaked, courtesy of the Chinese IT168 forums – who seem to be quite good at this photo-leaking lark.

Originally posted over at se-blog.com, the exact specifications of the device are not yet known, but as it will likely bridge the gap between the X10 and the X10 Mini, it stands to reason that the specifications will fall between the two as well.

Looking at the image, the ‘Shakira’ appears not surprisingly, to be very similar in appearance to the X10 and X10 Mini. It’s hard to tell a great deal about the phone based on the image alone, but the ability to at least tell the time looks promising, though with what appears to be a smaller screen than the X10, it seems unlikely that the ‘Shakira’ will boast the same WVGA (480 x 854) resolution.

The Sony Ericsson has a similar design to the Xperia X10 but is a much smaller handset in comparison. Little is currently known about the handset but it is believed to be available in a variety of colors and will feature a touchscreen display, 5 mega-pixel camera (with autofocus), 3.5mm audio jack, usb connectivity, and HSPA/WLAN.

Yesterday Rogers Canada announced that they will be launching the Xperia X10 later this year.
