Huawei Ascend Mate set to hit Chinese market on March 21st

It seems like we have been waiting for the release of the Huawei Ascend Mate for a really long time, but in reality Huawei is not too late in releasing the device relative to some of our earlier projections of a February release date. Huawei has confirmed today the giant phone will be available in the Chinese market on March 21 for 3,120 yuan ($500 USD). You may recall the Ascend Mate comes with a huge 6.1-inch IPS display, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a gargantuan 4050mAh battery, running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

What is still unclear is whether the Ascend Mate will ever find its way outside of China. There is some hope that it will at least make it to some European markets like Germany, where Amazon has listed the device for €499 ($646 USD).

Sony Plans To Position Itself Third In Smartphone Markets Worldwide

Sony is hoping to catch more of the smartphone market share this year in the hopes of placing itself as the third largest brand for mobile devices. As of Q4 2012, Sony was ranked fourth in smartphone market share at 4.5 percent of the market and sitting just behind Huawei with 4.9 percent of the market. Sony’s mobile business head Kunimasa Suzuki spoke at a roundtable briefing in Tokyo and says that they’ll alter smartphone development for each different market. Low-end Huawei Prism II with Jelly Bean coming to T-Mobile soon

Images and specs of the T-Mobile Prism II (Huawei U8686) have been leaked online via @evleaks. A followup to the former Huawei Prism, the Prism II will feature a similar form factor to its predecessor and will come with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, a 1.0 GHz CPU and a HVGA (480 x 320) display. Not much else is known yet about this device but check back with TalkAndroid as we learn more about the device.

Huawei Ascend G710 appears in leaked image, showcases its 5-inch, 720p display in the process

There’s a reason why Huawei has become one of the world’s top smartphone manufacturers, despite surprisingly flying under the radar: it continues to introduce all sorts of smartphones for consumers. Notorious beans-spiller evleaks has revealed the Ascend G710 smartphone— an interesting device to say the least. It is not known exactly what will be featured inside the device— though we do know it will feature a 5-inch screen with a 720p resolution, capacative buttons at the bottom (sigh) and a pretty sexy metallic backing on the back of the device.

No word yet on when this bad boy will hit the market, but interested parties should probably keep their eyes and ears open with us as it will probably be available sooner than later.

Huawei makes the Ascend P2 official, available 2nd quarter 2013

Huwaei just made the Ascend P2 official, which is of course the follow up to last year’s Ascend P1. It will feature a 4.7-inch 720p (1280 x 720) Infinity Edge display at 315ppi, a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 13 MP BSI rear-facing camera with HDR, a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, 2,420 mAh battery, and Android 4.1. It comes in at 8.4mm thick and is touted as the fastest LTE phone on earth with up to 150Mbps utilizing LTE Cat4. Just like all Huwaei phones, it will feature their own Emotion UI on top of stock Android.

We probably won’t see this one hit the U.S., but for those of you in Europe, you should be able to get your hands on one during the 2nd quarter for roughly €399 ($526). Hit the break for the full presser.

EE confirms smartphone activations fall in Q4 2012, 4G LTE to blame?

So we thought that EE’s launch of its super-fast LTE network would be welcome with open arms, but it appears there’s a slower adoption rate than expected. According to the 2012 year-end results from the wireless carrier, there were only 201,000 new subscribers for Q4, which is a mild disappointment to say the least. Fortunately, the wireless carrier was able to utilize its growing LTE network to springboard more of its customers into embracing smartphone use, which falls in line with some studies that we’ve heard before.

It’ll probably be a while before UK mobile users shy away from those HSPA+ networks until carriers like EE come up with a compelling reason for why LTE should be used. EE will certainly have its work cut out for it in the meantime.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 1.0 will be available on more than 70 devices

Today, the popular mobile processor company Qualcomm, talked about their Quick Charge 1.0 project. It’s part of a Snapdragon-powered phone’s power management and in theory should allow your device to charge up to 40 percent faster than before.

Latest Gartner report shows that mobile phone sales are down overall and Samsung still leads the pack, but Huawei may be primed for a major year

It appears that there is some minor slowdown in regards to the overall growth of mobile phone sales. According to research firm Gartner Inc., worldwide mobile phone sales amounted to 1.75 billion total units for 2012 which was a solid number, but represented slightly disappointing 1.7 percent decline from 2011 sales. Moreover, while Q4 2012 smartphone sales saw record smartphone sales of 207.7 million total units, which was up 38.3 percent from the Q4 2011— the overall demand for feature phones remained weak throughout 2012. Gartner found that overall phone sales totaled 264.4 million units in Q4 2012, which was down 19.3 percent from Q4 2011 and even found that sales will continue to drop for 2013 as well.

Additionally, the latest Gartner report pretty much solidified what we already knew— Samsung and Apple are far and away the top manufacturers in all the land by owning a 52% market share– though there may be a surprising competitor lurking in the shadows. Samsung held steady as the world’s #1 smartphone by having 64.5 million units sold for Q4 2012, up a whopping 85.3% from Q4 2011; Samsung also sold 384.6 million mobile phones for 2012, 53.5% of which were accounted by smartphone sales. Something surprising that resulted from Q4 2012 is the rapid ascension of a new brand that is quickly becoming familiar with consumers. Huawei had a surprisingly solid Q4 2012 by selling 27.2 smartphones to mobile users— which represented a 73.8% increase from Q4 2011. Additionally, Gartner is predicting a major year for Huawei as they have some superphones on the way that will go directly at the likes of Samsung and Apple.

Android drops to 69% of worldwide smartphone market share and Samsung continues to grow according to Canalys

Reports on market share have been steadily coming in from all the major players and they all seem to agree that Android is kicking butt. Now it’s time for Canalys to report their findings, and it appears they are in agreement. For the 4th quarter 2012, Android handsets accounted for 69% of the 216.5 million smartphones that were shipped worldwide. In the other not so shocking news, Samsung grew roughly 78% from the previous quarter to a market share of 29%. When it comes to comparisons, everybody always wants to know how Apple’s doing. In terms of iOS, the market share was 22.1% and in terms of smartphone share, it was  22.1%.

It should be noted that although Android’s numbers are good, they are actually down from 74% in the previous quarter. At the same time Apple grew from 15% to 22.1%. Apple’s growth is expected since they released the iPhone 5 in the later part of the year.

We have been hearing (and seeing) some increased mumblings about Huawei’s worst-kept secret ahead of MWC, so it’s only natural that we share with you all some additional shots of its upcoming smartphone. A casual Android fanatic got his hands on the Ascend P2 smartphone and decided to take some photos of its gorgeous display and sexy design. As you can see in the various shots, the device has its colorful full HD in plain view showcasing the awesome and sharp display, the gorgeous backing of the device and of course the smooth and stylish curves. Naturally the attractive design will be complimented by some impressive specs including a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, a 13MP camera and Jelly Bean running the show.

The good thing is that while we have been treated to even more photos of the upcoming device, MWC is just around the corner, so we’ll be able to see the device in plain view by then. You folks out there excited about this little toy?
