Sony_SmartWatch_2_SW2_USSony’s SmartWatch 2 looks to be on the way of a pretty big update. The demo unit of the SmartWatch 2 at last week’s Mobile World Congress was running 1.0.B.4.80 compared to the current build 1.0.B.3.46. The new firmware shows more information on the screen, including the weather, a pedometer, a battery indicator, the last notification received and the next upcoming alarm.

In addition, the new software includes a scrollable notification drop-down menu , the ability to choose which apps you want to receive notifications from, and customization options like the option to change your wallpaper and which apps are shown on the home screen. The update isn’t rolling out just yet, but should be soon.

Sony says “once-a-year” flagship strategy is dead

At MWC 2014 earlier this week, Sony unveiled their latest flagship devices, the Xperia Z2 smartphone and Z2 Tablet. For those not counting the days, this comes only about five and a half months after Sony unveiled the “flagship” Xperia Z1 at IFA 2013. According to Sony Mobile Creative Director Kurozumi Yoshiro, this quick turnaround is a reflection on how fast the industry is moving. According to Kurozumi, “In order to maintain a flagship, you must update at this frequency.” Thus, the Xperia Z2 is the flagship device for the first half of 2014 and buyers can expect a new flagship device to appear before the end of the year to serve in that role for the second half of 2014.

After announcing the Sony SmartBand at MWC 2014 this week, Sony has wasted no time in starting the retail blitz to get the devices into the hands of buyers. On the Sony Mobile Store, the device has already shown up for pre-order for £79.99 ($134 USD) in the U.K. and €99 ($136 USD) for other European markets. Although, Sony indicated the devices would be available in a variety of colors, thus far black appears to be the only choice available for early adopters that want to be the first to get the devices onto their wrists.

The first units of the Sony SmartBand destined for European markets and the U.K. are expected to be delivered in early April. That will give buyers an opportunity to spend some time with the Lifelog application prior to having the device in hand as Sony says the app should be available in Google Play sometime in March.

Sony no longer including permanent screen protectors for Xperia Z2 devices

by Aditya Thawardas on

xperia-tablet-z2There’s good news for you prospective Xperia Z2 buyers. At a meeting today at the Mobile World Congress, Sony confirmed that their “fixed screen protectors,” also known as “anti-shatter film,” will not be used on the Xperia Z2 and Z2 tablet. Instead, the devices exteriors will just contain bare glass and metal.

The previously used film had many problems, including their tendency to scratch and pick up fingerprints more easily than reinforced glass, which makes this news very welcome as Sony introduces their next generation of devices.

4_1_SmartBandSony’s SmartBand is in a group of its own. Not quite smartwatch, but more than just a fitness tracker, the device may have somewhat of an identity crisis on its hands. Along with the Sony Lifelog app, the device will be available in over 60 countries next month. The band itself will be able to track your exercises, steps, and sleep. That information is sent and logged in the Lifelog app so that you can keep track of it. On top of that it adds location data and social content. With the push of a button you can note important data moments so that you can come back and review it later.

Sony-Xperia-M-product-630x472Sony has always been known for its high quality and premium priced devices. Even so, Sony is looking to push a more affordable smartphone as well. Enter the Xperia M2. It packs a familar Xperia look and feel but at an affordable price. The specs aren’t anything to gawk over. It will come with a 4.8-inch qHD display, a Snapdragon 400 processor, a 2300 mAh battery, NFC, an 8MP camera, and LTE. No word on if the phone will have KitKat onboard or not. It will include three blockbuster movies as well as a month of Sony’s unlimited music service.

The device will be available in black, white and purple and is expected in April. It will have a dual-SIM option for those worldly folk.  No word on pricing yet, but Sony says, stresses even, that it will be affordable. Even with the wave of affordable devices hitting the market, Sony is pushing the media aspect of this device, so if you’re not yet loyal to any smartphone manufacturer and are in the market for a cheap smartphone, the Xperia M2 might be the way to go.
