Motorola has added a new Android phone to its ever expanding lineup, this time in the form of the Defy, a Motoblur’d Android 2.1 device which features a nearly indestructible 3.7-inch display.  Once again, Gorilla glass comes to the rescue here, which is the technology behind Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen.

The device is supposed to be able to withstand being placed in up to a meter of water, so a trip to the beach or the pool might not spell disaster if the phone decides it wants to take a bath. The Defy will also feature a 800MHz chip, and is expected to launch in Europe sometime in Q4 2010.  There is no word yet about pricing, or if this will ever be released in the US, but hit up the source link below for some more photos and information about the Defy.

Huawei has plans to release a new smartphone running Android next week. The Chinese manufacturer has released some other Android devices, and we hope to continue to see more released. While there isn’t any information on the exact cost of the new device, Huawei spokesperson Glory Cheung was cited as saying the new phone would be “highly competitive price-wise”. There is also no news as to which market, globally, the device will be offered in.

The official announcement should be on Thursday, at which point we will make sure to keep all our readers up to date. So be sure to keep it here for more!

Huawei looking to Android for new smartphones

With the launch of the Samsung Epic 4G having officially hit, the FCC has snapped some pics of this new fire starter in a whole new light: totally naked.

Wireless Goodness managed to dig up some pictures of the Epic stripped down to it’s birthday suit, and has given us a nice new view of the device. Take a look at the circuitry, boards, CPU, ports, everything. Full gallery below.

Android Only,  a conference for Android Developers being held in Stockholm September 29-30, will be featuring the world’s first Google TV, which is a Sony Internet TV with Google TV built in.  Google’s foray into TV is slated to launch this fall, featuring devices from Sony and Logitech, as well as a set-top-box from Dish Network.

As you can see from the Twitter screenshot, more details are still to come, so stay tuned for further updates.

World’s first Google TV to be shown off at Android Only

The Toshiba AC100, the company’s fist Android powered notebook, is showing some pretty stunning benchmark results when compared to other Android devices.  Utilizing Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chip, the AC100 blows past the Nexus One in the Quadrant benchmark test.  Also, it should be noted that the notebook is still only running Android 2.1, and should see an even further speed boost from 2.2

We have to wonder, though, whether or not such a powerful chip would be practical in a smartphone, making comparing a notebook to a phone a little questionable.  Still, the results are there for you to interpret any way you like, so leave us a comment below and tell us whether or not you think this is a fair and accurate comparison.

Nvidia’s Tegra 2 trumps the competition in speed tests

Infineon, a major player in the mobile broadband chip market (most notably the iPhone 4), has been partially grabbed by Intel for a crisp $1.4 billion, according to a press release. The Wireless Solutions Business section of Infineon accounted for almost 1/3 of their total $3.83 billion profit last year, making the price Intel is looking at shelling out more than reasonable.

Intel made it very clear in the release that Infineon will continue on as a standalone entity, and continue on with their support of ARM-based devices. They also say that their acquisition of the mobile sector of the popular baseband chip provider is to accelerate 4G LTE, while not leaving WiMAX behind, calling the two a “combined path” for their future. Maybe Intel just saw the similarities in their logos and thought it to be a sign? Full press release after the break.

Intel snags Infineon’s mobile sector for $1.4 billion to ‘accelerate 4G LTE’

You may not of known this, but Gigabyte, manufacturer of essentially anything you put inside a computer, also makes handsets. What you also don’t know is that Gigabyte lost anywhere from $9.3 to $12.5 million from its handset business in 2009.  You don’t need a Masters in finance to know that’s not good.

In an effort to turn things around (and realizing the potential) Gigabyte will be changing gears, shifting away from own-brand GSmart (Windows Mobile powered) sales to ODM, with Android as an additional operating system.

Of course, the possibility of a Gigabyte-manufactured phone making it to the US is pretty slim, it’d be interesting to see what they can develop and hopefully bring to the US.

Gigabyte ditches Windows Mobile, switches to Android

It seems that manufacturers just cannot keep up with demand these days. First what seemed like and eternity with the Droid Incredible delays, now the Droid X by Motorola just cannot push out enough product.

Now with the switch in LCD’s the Incredible can be had as soon as August 25th but if you want to get your hands on the mother of all Motorola devices, you have to wait until the second week of September.

With how bad HTC and the Incredible were with the delays, I am surprised there was not and planning changes on behalf of Motorola to meet the expected demand. Are any of you still waiting to receive your X?

More Droid X Delays but the Droid Incredible is Readily Available Now

We wrote earlier today about the power of Corning’s Gorilla glass, which is at the core of the Super AMOLED display utilized by the Galaxy S line of Android devices.  The technology is essentially a very thin layer of glass, which acts as a protective barrier over the AMOLED display.  A great video has emerged demonstrating a Galaxy S phone undergoing a barrage of tests, demonstrating how protective the glass actually is.  Check out the video below, and please refrain from testing your own Galaxy S device in this way.

Polaroid is planning on introducing a Bluetooth printer that will wirelessly communicate with your Android phone for easy photo printing. Another plus to these plans is that there is an App that will allow you to tweak and perfect your photos before printing. The new printer, dubbed the PoGo (This writer thinks that is a pretty clever name), should go for right around $100, and will print 3″x4″ photos using zero ink paper.

The app, which is currently available in the Android Market (for US users, other international users have claimed they cannot find it. Simply search for “Polaroid PoGo App”.), allows you to add text and frames to your pictures. Rumor has it that photos will take under a minute to print.
