According to Brodman, the follow-up handset to the popular T-Mobile G1 will be released in early summer with more specific details on the handset coming later this month.

"We are really excited about that. We have no more specific details at this time, but wanted to say we remain very committed to the Android platform and are excited about taking this next step."

Whilst Brodman refrained from giving too much information away, he did reveal that the handset would include the new Cupcake update and hinted that the device may be coming from a new handset partner such as Motorola or Samsung.

“We’ll have multiple new Android devices—from multiple partners—this year.”

The OHA is a global alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders who support the development of the Android platform.

Along with this announcement, Acer have also revealed plans to launch their first Android powered device in Q4 of this year.

London, 1st June 2009-Acer announces its joining of the Open Handset Alliance and expects to launch smartphones based on the Android platform in the fourth quarter of this year.

As a member of the Open Handset Alliance, Acer will work with its members to contribute to the development of the Android platform and bring consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today’s mobile platforms. By joining the Open Handset Alliance, Acer demonstrates its support for Android as an open mobile platform and its commitment to Android’s commercial success.

Android is a complete and open mobile phone software stack, featuring an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications. It includes everything a manufacturer or operator needs to build a mobile phone. Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer.

There are over 40 members in the Open Handset Alliance, including mobile operators, handset manufacturers, software companies, and semi-conductor companies.

Acer's Aymar de Lencquesaing has previously mentioned the upcoming release of an Acer Android phone. Speaking at the Global Technology Summit in Paris last month, he revealed "Late 2009, we're releasing a smartphone... full touch, at the price of feature phones today".

The HTC handset will feature a G1 / Dream style QWERTY keyboard slider, and more importantly include a HTC developed user interface rather than the standard Android UI that can be found on the previous HTC Android phones.

The HTC Lancaster will feature a 3 mega-pixel fixed-focus camera, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, and microSD memory expansion.

According to the leaked information the HTC Lancaster handset has a scheduled launch date for August 3rd, but it appears that HTC's decision to use a custom UI may delay the release date.
