Free version of Beautiful Widgets with in-app purchases now available

Beautiful_Widgets_Freemium_Splash_Banner

The folks over at LevelUp Studios have developed a free version of its hugely popular app, Beautiful Widgets.  Although augmented by in-app purchases for additional functionality and customization, it’s still worth a download due to the great looking widgets it provides for your home screen. Through in-app purchases it’s possible to unlock every feature that is included in the full paid version of the app.  This is nice because it allows users to pick and choose what kind of features they want, without having to pay for the full app.

Due to this welcome addition to the Google Play Store, the full app has been renamed Beautiful Widgets Pro. According to LevelUp Studios, both versions will maintain feature parity in future app updates.

Check out the link to the app in the Play Store after the break.

Action Launcher Makes Widgets Cool Again With Shutter Feature

action_launcher_pro_google_play_logo

I’m very particular when it comes to the launchers that I use. I’ve been perfectly content in my Nova Launcher set up for over a year now. It looks like this is going to change however, as Chris Lacy released an update for Action Launcher today with a killer new feature.  In this update, the Covers feature is taken a step further. Covers brought you your most accessed destinations quickly with the swipe of a finger and Action Launcher’s new Shutter feature looks to do the same with widgets.  For example you can slide your finger up on the Gmail icon and it displays the Gmail widget, giving you quick access to your email. Chrome gives you quick access to your bookmarks (see below). Most apps with widgets have this ability and I particularly liked being able to skip tracks in the Play Music App right from the icon.

Flipboard Debuting On The Samsung Galaxy S III Before Rolling Out To The Rest Of The Platform, Time Frame Unknown

For those of you patiently waiting for the popular Flipbard application, one of Google Currents‘ direct competitors, you’ll be happy to know that the app has finally made its way to the Android platform.  To kick things off, the app will be exclusive to Samsung Galaxy III devices initially before finally rolling out to the rest of the platform.  We weren’t told exactly how long the rest of the world will have to wait but we’ll do our best to find out for you.  The UI looks pretty similar to what the iPhone currently has today, and as expected, allows gestures for navigating through your aggregated content.  However, unlike the iPhone, the Android version will of course sport a cool widget which takes up an entire page providing the day’s latest and popular news feeds.  If you think you’ll most likely be on board come launch day, you can sign up at the link below to receive the update once the application is available for Android.  And by the way the devs stated the app will be available for “Android mobile phones” we’re not banking on a tablet version right off the bat.  So, here’s to hoping we don’t have to wait for the app too long.  And if we do, lets hope our boys over XDA will have something to say about it.  Are you looking forward to the app or are you content with Google Currents and other news aggregation apps already on the Android OS?
