Fortune is reporting that T-Mobile may offer free access to email on their Android plan without the need for a data plan.

The free email service will be for users of Gmail, naturally. The article also notes that 'free' will be subsidized by Ads.
Quote:
Android lands at T-Mobile Tuesday, and as part of the effort to deliver the Google phone to the mobile market, T-Mobile is considering including free e-mail access.

The new Android-powered phone will have Google’s (GOOG) Gmail service built in, and T-Mobile executives are considering offering access to Gmail free, without the need for a data plan, says one person close to the discussions.

Apparently the leaked service info kinda says that you'll need a data plan:

Gmail account required to sign in and use, no corporate access email available.

There is a required data plan associated with this device; it will not work without the data plan active, sorry no prepay.

haha, i just posted a thread stating that you do get free email access with a G1
WITHOUT the data plan
i bought my G1 for $400 without the data plan, just a basic plan.
And I am able to access my Yahoo email anywhere.
It is pretty awsome.
So yes it is confirmed, you don't need the data plan to have email access

Oh and yeah it works without wifi, because i nether have wifi or have it enabled.
