THat means you have lost 3G reception and its now simple 2G.
Correct me if im wrong.
If you should have 3G coverage then restart your phone, if that doesnt work, have you accidentally switched it off ?? See SETTINGS >> WIRELESS CONTROL >> MOBILE NETWORKS >> USE ONLY 2G NETWORKS to see if ther is a green tick. If there is, untick it.

Else you may need to check your 3G coverage with your provider.

T-mobile's second (2.5 technically?) generation network is called Edge, it would show an 'E' icon, not 'G'. If you had use only 2G selected I don't know if it would block Edge as well. Wouldn't he have had to put the phone into "use only 2G" in the first place?

'G' is GPRS (link is to the user manual)

For all the people out there who don't know how to do a google search... The difference between Edge and GPRS is.....

When ever I have a problem with the phone (network connections problems and the like) a good old fashioned restart helps me. However I hope you've already tried this.
