Perhaps the process of updating itself consumes a lot of battery power which is throwing our perceptions out??
I'm now down to 67% which indicates minimal consumption since this morning..

The upgrade process could be a factor yes, i think my handset had to reboot twice during the process.
I'm currently charging my to 100% and plan to monitor the battery consumption over the next 24 hours, i guess it's a little early to tell just yet.

Mine was a brand new T-Mobile number not ported from anywhere and I still don't have it.
Looking at some of the info and 'check in' status inside the device info page, I would say the device authenticates a to a server, possibly the build host (undroid13.corp.google.com) and this cycles through all the checked in devices to push the update instead of the service message in sms therory?

Can someone who has got the UK update let us know the various information we could use to try and figure out the manual update location based on the all the US chatter.
I'd like to try and work out the url based on https://android.clients.google.com/u...-RC19+RC28.zip

You dont have to type anything in the "requested build" box.
I typed nothing and hit check for updates then it just started downloading.
I dont really know why its not doing the same for you???
I have also noticed inferior battery life on RC8!!! wtf???

Nah not for me. my battery lasts for like half a day, thats with receiving/making phone calls, sending/receiving text messages, surfing the web etc. i only use my phone for all these features occaisionally, ive switched off my wifi, gps and bluetooth made changes to my display settings and anything else that would make a difference.
i cant compare it to the RC-07 because i only had the g1 3 days before the phone was updated to RC-08.
