Hey guys,
First post, found the site through google, so many thanks for anyone who might be able to help.
I've just got the htc desire on T mobile, one of the main things I need is email access due to me running my own business and practically being on the road all the time.
I've to set up both my email addresses, one hotmail one a pop3 address which is hosted by streamline.
I've entered the correct email address and password, protocol as pop, security type SSL (tried all other options too without success)
"cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information, your server is not responding"
I get the same issue when I try to enter hotmail information, correct details again.
My other phone, n96, plus my laptop, pc etc can access emails using the same details so as such i'm curious as to whether there is something im unfamilliar with in respect to android? or whether there is an issue with the phone? or whether i am being plain stupid.
if any advice could be given i would appreciate it
many thanks
Simon

Hi,
Not much help but I have exactly same issue, except my hotmail and googlemail accounts work fine, however my ntlworld account fails ie it receives but I cannot send replies which is very strange and annoying I get the same message you received. Unfortunately T mobile cannot help and have said until HTC send them the techincal specs they are unable to do anything ...have you thought of emailing HTC support to see if they can resolve the issue?

I had the same issue and got this reply from HTC, it doesnt help but explains why it happens, his solution he gives does not work but a way round it is to use the webmail:
"I suppose you could call it a known issue.
Blueyonder (and all the virginmedia addresses) block access to send through their SMTP server if you are not connected to your home broadband. While connected to wifi, your phone would be able to send, but not when away from home.
This is a security feature that Virgin and telewest before them put in place on their email accounts to try and limit their use as spam relays.
For this reason, you would need to set the outgoing mail server to your mobile network's server. I believe that t-mobile server is smtp.t-email.co.uk (or at least it used to be, i am sure they would be able to confirm this for you) and then you would be able to send. you do not need a username or password for the outgoing mail server as you can be verified by your t-mobile sim to their own server.
This server would allow you to send when away from home, but would not work at home. this is a side effect of the securty put in place by virgin."
Hope that helps

hey people,
Just reading through your issues and tested with mine. I also get the same message. testing scenarios:
1, googlemail - works fine!
2, private email - displayed connection error.
ok, so I got the same. however, the message is misleading as you only need to continue and there is no need to choose SSL.
for some reason, give me time to solve it, but the message doesnt stop the email account being setup. i'm able to retrieve emails and also send.
I suggest you try again and press continue and let me know.
just to confirm my details in case they are different:
network: tmobile
mobile: htc desire
hope this helps!

Unfortunately I still get the message
"cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information, your server is not responding"
Nothing seems to work changing the smtp from ntlworld.com to smtp.t-email.co.uk does nothing either.
Unfortunately this is getting very irritating had a blackberry and now begining to wish I never changed over. If it worked on Blackberry (Vodafone network) why doesnt it work with HTC T Mobile??

Hi there
I was having a similar issue and found this thread and started to doubt but no need!
My work pop mail account is now set up using:
mail.domain.com
smtp.t-email.co.uk
Uncheck the 'login required' box - no security (port 25 & 110)
And voila!
Tested all ok send and receive.
Enjoy!

Well I'll be damned - this was the most frustrating thing when I moved to the Hero from my N95, Goydriod your solution works perfectly! Now to try the Hotmail fix...
ETA: Unfortunately it would appear the settings listed by fabpri are the ones I already have in my hotmail account setup and I can send from that account but not receive. Still, I now have three of my four email acounts working on the Desire, so that's progress!

Hello everybody. I used to have the same problem. Now using Maildroid which solved it. Just go to andoid market on your phone and search for "maildroid". This program can handle multiple e-mail accounts.
