With the talk on the Nexus One release and the subsequent Tmobile data plan, I am thinking about getting one. Only problem is that I don't really want to pay a $80/month cell phone bill when I have wireless access at home and work already. Especially if the plan only includes 500 minutes!!wtf!
I was wondering, for those of you with Tmobile data already, is there any way out of the data plan once you buy a phone requiring it?
For a two year contract, the data plan comes out to $1920 (before taxes & phone not included). Essentially, the break even point for the subsidized phone is about 10 months ($200 w/ tmobile vs $500 unlocked)(I currently pay $50 for unlimited minutes and 400 sms).
Is there any cheaper way to get data if you buy an unlocked phone and want DATA?

I have been using my unlocked Nexus One phone with my $10/month T-Mobile account (that I get for working for T-Mobil's sister company, T-Systems). It works OK and can even browse the web.
Of course, WiFi always works regardless of which plan or even without a SIM.
My T-Mobile wing also works fine using either the same account or my T-Systems account (so they can call me at 3am if jobs fail). However, I never tried browsing the web with it either.

Not really sure what T-systems is, but when you say the $10/mo plan works "OK", do you mean that it is somehow performs lower than the more expensive data plan?

T-Systems is Deutsche Telekom's IT Consulting subsidiary and T-Mobile is their Mobil Phone subsidiary (Deutsche Telekom being the German Phone Company, similar to the original AT&T).
The $10 plan in question is the 2000 minute plan for employees.
I mean that I am able to browse the web using my existing plan. Also, it uses the WiFi connection that I have at home, which is quite fast. I am also able to browse the web here at work, without WiFi (I have only had the phone for about 1 day now), I think it is using the EDGE connection.
However, I have never used the "more expensive data plan", so I don't know how it compares, I assume the "more expensive" plan is probably faster.

Thanks. The fact that I can use another data plan is exactly what I wanted to know.
Downgrading voice and text plans just to get the subsidized price and and expensive data plan are not options for me. Purchase of the N1 depends on keeping my current plan + adding an affordable data package.
