I'm thinking about buying the Hero through Sprint. I may be able to buy an unlocked version from Best Buy. If so, I'm considering not getting the data plan with my phone. I have access to Wifi 90% of my day and think it's silly to pay $60.00 extra a month to add data to our family plan just to get internet access the other 10% of the time. I'm curious how much this will limit my phone. Sure there are apps such as visual voice mail and Google Voice may not work well w/o an internet connection, but I would think many of the other features would work just fine. Any thoughts on this?

The phone is permanently connected to the internet unless you can be bothered to keep turning on and off sync. It would only take a minor memory lapse (to turn off syncing) and without a data plan you could end up with a $500 bill!!

This phone is all about internet. You say you're planning on buying the phone SIM free but would it not be cheaper to get it though a network, with data plan?

Hey I have the Sprint Hero and it's just amazing what it can do. You need the data plan.
