I know they're gonna be pretty pricey, but im considering shelling out for one come October.

the man reasoning being that i'll have to wait another month (UK), but more importantly i've still got 6 months left on my current contract with Orange.

Dont have much experience ending contracts early, so i figure it'll be cheaper to buy an unlocked G1 and use my Orange sim.

From the sounds of it you'll be able to buy them unlocked straight from T-Mobile pirced at $399.

Quote:
More interestingly, buyers would be able to have access to a "contract free" G1 (with a price point of $399), and could unlock the device with T-Mobile's blessing after 90 days. Brodman also said that the company's policy of unlocking phones for customers in good standing wouldn't change for this phone.

I think you're getting "unlocked" and "contract-free" confused.

You can buy the G1 (sim-locked) for $179 under a 2-year contract and get it unlocked 90 days later.

Or

You can buy the G1 (still sim-locked) for $399 without a 2-year contract and get it unlocked 90 days later.

The only difference is you are not under contract with the $399 price price point. The contract-free device is still locked and you still have wait 90 days to get it sim-unlocked.

It's still a little cheaper though to buy it for $179 and take the $200 cancellation fee 90 days later once you get it unlocked (only $379) if you're planning on ditching T-Mobile. The "contract free" option is usually just a gimmick for the carrier to get a few more bucks out of you.

Also, T-Mobile USA is not going to open an account for you if you live in the UK. You'll need a USA billing/shipping address. And what would you do for 90-days? You would pay a monthly service charge ($60+) for a phone you can't use until you can unlock it?

So by "unlock after 90 days" that means you have to take it in to some T1 shop and let their techs do it ? Or can they unlock it remotely through their network ? Or is there some timer in the phone so if I'm overseas, it'll just become unlockable..

So how easy would it be to unlock it ourselves ? It's just going to be some software somewhere inside of android right ? or is this a chip powered lock..

Android is great. I understand T1 need to make some money. I just wish that we mere non-americans didn't have to wait 3 months to a year to get our hands on cool USA tech.
