Roaming with TMobile UK

I have a question about roaming - I spend a lot of my time in France, and, seeing as the data roaming costs are prohibitive, if I get a G1, I would like to be able to switch off data roaming.

First of all, is this possible with TMobile? I know it is with the iPhone and O2, and am sure that a device that is as connected as the G1 would easily use lots of data automatically, so it's quite important.

Secondly, if it is possible, would individual apps still be able to use 3G or GPRS without the phone downloading my mail, etc? I send quite a lot of texts, and while I'm outside the UK I use a client for vgsmail.com, which allows me to text at 6p/sms (plus the cost of the data of course, which is tiny). I would like to be able to do a similar thing if/when I get the G1. Is this feasible?

there is a old post somewhere on the forums about this. But basically. If i was you. i would go to a phone shop and buy a cheap handset to use abroad! you can switch off most of the data connections. But there are ones in the background that you cant turn off!!! It would cost you a lot of money!!!
