Sprint: Android phone will "definitely" be out by 2009

Seems this week has been the busiest yet for Android rumors. Some 'inside sources' are claiming that Sprint are very much on schedule with their Android planning and plan launch the handset on their network before the year's out.

What's more they're are (reportedly) claiming that their Android offering will include "other functionality" to T-Mobile's Dream / G1 device.

Much of this speculation seems to have arisen from the Google developer day event in London at the beginning of the week.

Great to see other carriers getting the word out, as up until T-Mobile have been grabbing most of the headlines.

Sprint was getting a bit annoyed with the fact that Android wasn't finalized yet and was receiving a steady stream of tweaks. This was creating rework for the Sprint programmers working with Android. So when he says that it isn't good enough, (and this is conjecture on my part) I think what he was trying to communicate was that Android wasn't in a completed state yet and as a result, they couldn't keep their own applications in a working state.

Looks like the first Sprint-Nextel Android phone will be made by Samsung. Bad news, though, it sounds like it's going to have a touch screen keyboard.

Sprint is spear heading the Android world. When the Android comes out on Sprint will be better then any other carrier.

This thread, at least for me, is more of a 'what' (kind of phone)/'when' (can we get it) thread rather than 'what if' (sprint goes android). So, I don't think anyone has forgotten, really. Although, I have seen cases where big corporations have conveniently 'forgotten' about initiatives (or worse, change them to be something quite different from what they've stated), I don't think this is one of those instances.

Flamebait aside, I've heard really terrible things about Sprint customer service, so I don't know about them being the 'better' carrier, but I also I can't say as I've experienced any problems with them myself.

In years past Sprint has had horrbile customer service. But they are getting A LOT better.. In fact if you read this article here :

Besides customer service, we cannot excuse what Sprint has acheived. First 4G network in the Nation with the merger of ClearWire and Xohm. Largest 3G network. Prices are lower then ATT and Verizon. And if you compare their Simply Everything plan to Tmobile it's the same price but you get a lot more for ( including GPS ).

Overall, I think an Android phone would be more suited for a network that was larger and FASTER. In fact, I live in Denver, CO and there is very LITTLE T-Mobile 3G service here. Actually, there really isn't any except in a few spots.

With the Androids open(ness) if that's a word. I think having all those apps on Sprint ( or even Verizon ) would be a lot better then having it on the current carrier.

Engadget is now quoting a release date of "by June". Disregard the pic. That's just an Instinct with the G1 interface photoshopped in. I found a second article saying that Android development at Sprint has been fast-tracked due to demand, but that article cited an unnamed individual familiar with the matter, so you know what that's worth.
