I have used MANY phones from the iPhone, Blackberry Curve & Tour, and now my Moment. I loved my iPhone in almost every way.. except for the fact that I was tied to AT&T. But let me tell you, this phone is by far my favorite. I love its capabilities and performance. Yes, it has a few quirks... just like any device.
From my own experience it out performs Blackberry by leaps and bounds, you just have to adjust your thinking sometimes.

compared to HTC Diamond it's slightly better in all respects. Compared to Palm PRe, no matter what's not quite up to snuff with the Moment, NOTHING is as bad as the Pre in terms of battery life, dropped calls, can't watch video, teeny qwerty sliding out bottom.
so, even though it is some of the things the original poster wrote, slow, battery dies, touch screen issues and calling up apps while you're on the phone, still... I"ll take it over the Pre and had to return.

For starters you dont do a full review of a phone after only 2 freaking days.
Most of the pluses are not related to the phone but android itself.

3. The Samsung Moment only pushes emails for gmail accounts. Again, it seems google really wants to force everyone who gets an android phone to switch everything they do over to google. Not cool.
|
This has nothing to do with android or the phone. "Push" as it is called happens from the server end so you should be complaining that your crappy email provider is not giving you push services.

|
4. For POP / IMAP email accounts, the fastest it checks your email is every 5 minutes.
|
It is absolutely asinine to expect any different. Go ahead and set it to 5 minutes and see your battery last half a day and your data usage go through the roof. Its silly to want faster checking, unless you keep your phone plugged in 24/7 this is a really stupid thing to ask for.

5. For POP users (read Yahoo), when on a computer the emails you send from your phone you won't be able to see in your computer/online sent mail folder. *Not good*.
|
Take it up with yahoo...

7. Yahoo email users (like me) can only get emails on their phone if you have a Yahoo Plus account ($19.99/yr). That sucks. That's more of a yahoo problem then an Android one, but still. At least with the blackberry there is a Y!Mail application you can download to get yahoo mail for free with similar functionality as you do on a computer. ...Maybe Yahoo will do the same for Android, but I don't know... Google & Yahoo are competitors.
|
Again, take that up with yahoo... I remember back when they started charging for POP usage its when i stopped using them for my main email.
Most of your cons come back to you being stupid and using the absolute worst email provider in the world.

Had a Hero for 3 weeks and the Moment is superior in every way...
1- Sluggish screen? Compared to what? It's more responsive than the iphone 3gs or Hero...
|
I had a good laugh at this... Thank you very much. I do however suggest you actually go use the touchscreen on the iphone before saying anything so stupid again. The touchscreen on the iphone is vastly superior to ALL android phones in terms of responsiveness and accuracy. The moment has one of the worst touch screens i have ever used.
All that said my wife has a moment, i have a hero, and i have spent a lot of time with the droid and can say that of all the moment is the worst of the lot by far.
-Worse battery life (I dont care what the manufacturer claims for estimated life its awful)
-Cheap slider that loosens up pretty bad. (Do a quick google search and you'll find a TON of complaints about this one)
-I hate the cheap covers for 3.5mm stero jack and power adapter
-Standard USB cable does not work like with the hero
All that is subjective and up to personal taste usage etc. but the one thing that i absolutely hate about the moment is that it has a faster processor than both phones i mentioned yet feels no faster and at times even seems more sluggish.

You know what he meant, jerk. He isnt talking about the phone pushing emails out, duh.

Business people do expect to have emails recieved within seconds of being sent. Ive had blackberries for 3 years and thats exactly what they do. 5 minutes is way too long to wait for critical emails such as power loss notifications or critical server outages. Man, you dont know what stupid is.
He must have an Exchange 2000 server, which moxier is not compatible with. I dont think there is any literature that states that detail. All I ever saw was that it works with Microsoft Exchange server.

You guys are blind. Sluggish screen switching compared to blackberry, which he plainly stated.

Is that the genious conclusion your tiny little brain came up with? You sound like a whiny littly girl with no sense but to say, "youre wrong cuz ur stupid!"
I had to post because it aggrevates me when people with relevant information are called stupid by as$holes that are irrelevant.

I have had my Samsung Moment for 28 days now, and I agree with most of the information from the original poster. The random phone calls are very annoying.
I also need to sync with Outlook directly. Doing a 3 way sync through google is not an option, and I work or the government so opening up the Microsoft Exchange server so I can sync, is not really an option. I think I have found a pretty good fix through CompanionLink, but it is not without quirks...and it costs $40.
Also, I did some research on this phone prior to buying, and all the reviews were quite favorable, it would have been nice to know some of these issues. I have serious time and knowledge invested so I will probably stick it out. But I agree, it seems like the phone is trying to FORCE you to use everything google. The direct sync with outlook has been around for 10 years or more, I don't want another email acct. thank you very much.

Bottom Line
Good for casual user
Bad for business user.
I researched the phone online before I bought it and came across positive reviews. It's clear though that those people didn't really own the phone and go through it thoroughly.
I'm not one to get on forums and post but I'm writing this so that other people have a real life review of the pros & cons of the Samsung Moment from Sprint.
PROS:
- Awesome display. It looks great.
- Touch screen and slide out keyboard so you don't have to type on those pesky touch pads.
- Android user interface is fun to use
- Excellent rendering of websites
- Quality media player (sound & video)
- Integrates with gmail / google users well
- Seems like a good device design for a CASUAL user - college student type who maybe texts a lot and wants something fun, but doesn't use their phone for anything serious.
- The optical mouse works pretty well, although sometimes it jumps too fast from one item to the next skipping what I want to click on.
CONS:
- Poor phone for business users (for all the reasons below)
- For my taste, the touch screen does not respond fast enough. I'm used to having a blackberry and flying around from one thing to the next.
- I'm new to touch screens and was worried I would have this exact problem, and it's true. I have trouble clicking on the smaller items or ones close to each other. Too many times over just the last few days I tried to click on one thing only to be sent to the adjacent link. Very annoying. Could I get used to / better at this? ...maybe
- The touch screen is supposed to automatically detect your face when your on a phone call but this is pretty spotty.
I had an important business call come in and when I put the phone to my ear it automatically called someone in my favorites list. When I realized, hung up and got back to my original call, it then opened up a game application which started playing music during my call. Needless to say, I was not amused.
- It almost forces you to use gmail because:
1. There is no contact sync for Outlook users. In fact, the only way to get your contacts on this phone is to either buy third party sync software - why should I spend extra money on something every other smartphone does for free --- OR you can export a .cvs file and import into a gmail account. But then the phone only sync to the gmail account, it'll never sync to the Outlook or Yahoo or where ever your contacts are stored. Plus this work around does not get your Outlook notes or tasks onto your phone.
2. Ironically google does have a free application you can download to sync to your outlook calendar but again it requires a gmail account. Though I did this and it works (really 3 way sync - phone, gmail, outlook).
3. The Samsung Moment only pushes emails for gmail accounts. Again, it seems google really wants to force everyone who gets an android phone to switch everything they do over to google. Not cool.
4. For POP / IMAP email accounts, the fastest it checks your email is every 5 minutes.
5. For POP users (read Yahoo), when on a computer the emails you send from your phone you won't be able to see in your computer/online sent mail folder. *Not good*.
6. To try and work around this problem, you can setup your gmail account to check (fetch) your other pop / imap email account. Then it'll push those emails to your phone.
***But the catch here is that it'll only fetch emails for the other address when it feels like it! - Technically google has it setup to fetch emails more frequently if you receive frequent emails and less frequently if you receive occasional emails. Makes sense for the casual user, but for work purposes I can't have google deciding when it wants me to get my emails. I'm on the road a lot and I rely on getting information asap. This sucks!
8. The battery dies fast when using email & the internet with the frequency I do. My blackberry curve never died this quickly. I'm charging this thing twice a day.
So far that's my assesment. I am very seriously considering returning this phone and getting a Blackberry Tour. I'm going to sleep on it.
If anyone has any comments to add to this, PLEASE do. Also if you have solutions to any of the following, let me know!
The Samsung Moment from Sprint runs the original Android, I wonder if these same problems exist on the newer Android 2.0? Can anyone tell me?
Thanks!

Thank you for the info posted. I concur with your post. I would add: frequent problems with getting email to the phone; battery is poor if actually viewing webpages, news, email, etc.; SLOW reaction time to "touches"; non-intuitive use. I do not care what others compare the phone to === I compare it to my expectations. Frequent automated random out dialing is also not desired. Last example: 5 calls to 3 different people while Moment was on charger, on my desk - no where near to me to create the problem......
Embarassing, undocumented ""feature"". Can you say Microsoft?
I suspect some of the problems I am having are the network it is on...... Not impressed with Sprint's data service any more than this phone on it. But, then Sprint does not have its network anymore - outsourced. Clearly a """"successful"""" outsource.......
Look elsewhere === there are better products and service.
