There is a known issue with GPS positioning on Sansung Galaxy S i9000. the phone is not able to get any fix on satellite and hence fails to pinpoint your position.
Froyo upgrade was supposed to have fixed the issue, but I doubt whether that has happened. Has anyone faced this issue and has been able to fix it permenently?

Thanks for your reply. Has 2.2.1 out already? Even after installing Android 2.2 the issue has not been resolved on my phone. Finally, I had to buy and install GPS booster on my phone and now GPS is better.

2.2.1 was out in December for me in the uk. i've an unlocked Galaxy S on the O2 network, so i downloaded from Samsung through kies..
although i'd not make much use of the gps, before 2.2 i could not use it 9 times out of every 10 times i tried. now it works and works well.

Unfortunately, in India,Samsung has not officially announced the arrival of 2.2.1 and Kies does not offer any update to 2.2.1. I guess that, we Indians will have to wait longer for it to arrive, like always.

I have Samsung Galaxy s i9000, with Froyo. On my recent visit to Rajasthan, i could get GPS fix (with much difficulty) but could not see my exact location, as the map was not getting loaded. i did not have access to GPRS nor Wi-fi connection. Is it because of non-access to GPRS or wi-fi connection, the maps did not get loaded and I could not see my exact location?

I also have the Samsung Galaxy S GT-1900 and when I use the GPS for voice navigationg it regularly loses the signal. I'm wondering if it's a settings tweak that is required.

Hi nitin,
The reson why maps are not loaded is indeed the lack of wifi and mobile data connection.
The poor positioning is caused by poor GPS reception. That is common in areas with tall buildings like cities. Also, if you are sitting inside a car, the satellites directly above you will not be received very well.
